Two distinct rail experiences give Almamellék a clear focus. In 2025, a 530-meter-long draisine track was laid next to the station building. You can ride a pedal-powered draisine along it. By contrast, the Zselici Csühögő Forest Railway offers a tourist ride between Almamellék and Sasrét. Its six-kilometer-long route passes through a broad valley with beautiful views. The difference is tangible: on the draisine, you pedal yourself; on the forest railway, the ride through the landscape is the main attraction. Before your trip, check the operating arrangements for the draisine and the forest railway timetable.

Exhibitions at the station

There are also suitable options for visitors who want to include exhibitions alongside the rides. The interactive “Biedermannok Öröksége” exhibition is housed in the station building in Almamellék. At the departure station of the Zselici Csühögő, you can also visit a forestry exhibition and an exhibition about the narrow-gauge railway. The program therefore ranges from an interactive exhibition format to topics in forestry and narrow-gauge railways. Before your visit, check the current visitor regulations for the exhibition in the station building.

Other highlights in the wider destination of Baranya

In the wider destination of Baranya, Pécs and its cultural venues offer a different focus from Almamellék’s rail experiences. The Early Christian Necropolis of Sopianae in Pécs includes decorated tombs dating from the 4th century. They were built as underground burial chambers with above-ground memorial chapels and decorated with richly detailed Christian wall paintings. Exhibitions on art and family history are central to the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter. These include “Golden Age of Zsolnay,” the “Pink Exhibition,” and an exhibition on the family and factory history. For visits with children, the quarter also offers outdoor playgrounds, an interactive lab, a planetarium, the Bóbita Puppet Theatre, a ceramics painting workshop, and classes at the Hercules Workshop. The freely accessible outdoor area of the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter can be entered and used free of charge during opening hours.

Near Szaporca, the Ős-Dráva Visitor Center offers an interactive exhibition, an agricultural demonstration area featuring practical farming, and three themed educational trails. They provide information about traditional agriculture, the Ős-Dráva program, and wildlife along the Drava. The agricultural area features native Hungarian domestic animals, including Hungarian Grey cattle, Mangalica pigs, Hucul horses, and traditional breeds of sheep and poultry. This place thus combines exhibitions and educational trails with insights into agriculture and the animals on display.

Siklós Castle is another distinct cultural destination in the wider Baranya region. It is one of Hungary’s best-preserved military complexes and one of the country’s significant Renaissance buildings. Modernization of the museum wing made the Gothic section, previously inaccessible to visitors, accessible. In Villány, the focus is on food and wine: along the cellar row, you can go from cellar to cellar and sample wines and food throughout the year. These destinations offer different highlights, from early Christian funerary art and exhibitions to landscape and agriculture, castle architecture, and wine.

If the draisine, forest railway, and station exhibitions are the reason for your stay, focus your search on Almamellék. If the other places in the wider destination of Baranya are your main focus, include them as separate destinations in your plans.
