A 13th-century church, a lookout tower with a special dedication and a 6.5-kilometre circular trail offer different ways to explore Hetvehely. You can discover the village through the lens of its history or choose a marked hiking route with several named stops.

Church and Lookout Tower in Hetvehely

The church in Hetvehely dates from the 13th century and belongs to the Árpád era. The Gábor Antal Lookout Tower stands on Fehér-hegy. It was built in 2002 to plans by Imre Makovecz in memory of forestry director Gábor Antal. The structures reflect different periods: the church points to the Middle Ages, while the lookout tower represents a later commemorative project with a named architect and honouree.

The two sites also offer different points of focus: the church provides access to the village’s older history, while the lookout tower adds its dedication and story of construction. The tower stands on Fehér-hegy in Hetvehely; the circular trail is another way to explore the village and its surroundings.

A Marked Circular Trail with Several Stops

The 6.5 km circular trail starts in Hetvehely and follows marked hiking paths past the Kincset rejtő erdő tanösvény and the erdei tornapálya to Erdő Háza. The return to the village is via the Lombkorona tanösvény and yellow- and red-marked circular trails. The description therefore gives not only the distance, but also the route, intermediate stops and return path. If you are weighing up individual cultural sites versus a continuous hike, this loop offers a clearly defined route option.

The Nyugat-Mecsek Tájvédelmi Körzet includes areas within the administrative boundaries of Hetvehely. This adds a nature conservation dimension to the local buildings and marked circular trail, offering a perspective on the landscape.

More Cultural and Nature Destinations in Branau

If you would like to explore other destinations in Branau as well as Hetvehely, Pécs, Szaporca and other places offer a range of themes. These additions span early Christian history, exhibitions, nature education and regional cuisine.

In Pécs, the Early Christian Necropolis of Sopianae includes decorated 4th-century tombs. It comprises underground burial chambers and above-ground memorial chapels, with richly decorated Christian wall paintings. The Zsolnay Cultural Quarter offers a different perspective on cultural history, with the “Golden Age of Zsolnay” and “Pink Exhibition” displays, as well as an exhibition on the family and factory history.

The Zsolnay Cultural Quarter offers children outdoor playgrounds, an interactive lab, a planetarium, the Bóbita Puppet Theatre, a ceramic painting workshop and classes at the Hercules Workshop. The freely accessible outdoor area can also be entered and used free of charge during opening hours, so be sure to check the hours when planning your visit.

The Ős-Dráva Visitor Centre is near Szaporca. It offers an interactive exhibition, a demonstration farming area with hands-on activities, and three educational trails. Their themes are traditional farming, the Ős-Dráva Programme and the wildlife along the Drava. The farming area features native Hungarian domestic animals, including Hungarian Grey cattle, Mangalica pigs, Hutsul horses, and old breeds of sheep and poultry.

Another nature stop is the Wilderness Educational Trail on the Old Drava. Its facilities include a birdwatching and bird-ringing station, a lookout point, a photography hide, a covered activity area and several rest stops. In Siklós, the castle offers a historical focus: it is one of Hungary’s best-preserved military complexes and one of the country’s most significant Renaissance buildings. Modernisation of the museum wing opened the previously inaccessible Gothic section to visitors.

Nagyharsány and Villány also offer other discoveries in Branau. The Kikerics Panorama Trail allows safe passage along the cliff edge and protects the park’s plant life from trampling. The “Art in Nature” programme at the Nagyharsány Sculpture Park includes a guided tour. In Villány’s cellar row, you can go from cellar to cellar all year round and sample wines and delicious food.
