Sellyeâs Castle Park is located in the centre of town and covers seven hectares. The grounds of the Municipal Thermal Bath have a different character: they cover four hectares and are laid out like a park. Together, these places show two different sides of a stayâa historic park in the centre and separate grounds around the bath.
Museum Courtyard and Local History
The photo exhibition âĂdvözlet SellyĂ©rĆlâ is on permanent display in the museum gallery. Its photographs offer insights into the townâs history, which spans several centuries. Another permanent exhibition is devoted to the life and work of Kiss GĂ©za; it was renewed in 2023. The two exhibitions have different focuses: the townâs history in one, and an individual in the other.
You can also explore the museum area outdoors: behind the museum building, in the Museum Courtyard, there is an accessible open-air exhibition with an open-air museum. The traditional talpas house in the open-air collection contains original furnishings. When planning a visit, you can choose between the exhibitions in the gallery and the accessible collection in the courtyard.
Parks and Protected Nature
The Castle Park was laid out around the turn of the 20th century. Characteristic historicist features from that period have been preserved there. The arboretum around Draskovich Castle is slightly larger than the Castle Park, at 7.65 hectares, and has been protected since 1965. The information about location, size and history helps distinguish the two park areas without treating them as a single site.
Another prominent landmark is Sellyeâs Reformed Church, north of the town centre. It stands on raised ground enclosed by a brick retaining wall. On the outskirts of town, Kis-rĂ©t lies within an area of 79.1718 hectares; Kis-rĂ©t is locally protected there. The options thus range from a central park to a protected area on the edge of town.
Thermal Bath: Pools and Season
Sellye Municipal Thermal Bath has four pools: a swimming pool, a teaching pool, a sitting pool and a childrenâs pool. The thermal water in the sitting pool is 36 °C. The pools offer different types of bathing in one place; these details refer to the bath, not the grounds of the Castle Park.
The thermal bath operates seasonally, from 1 June to 31 August. During the season, it is open daily from 10:00 to 22:00. Check the opening hours locally before travelling. This makes it possible to plan a visit to the bath in line with the season, while the galleries, Museum Courtyard, parks and church offer other ways to spend your time.
More to Explore in the Wider Baranya Destination
The wider Baranya destination also offers distinct cultural and nature experiences beyond the Sellye locations described here. In PĂ©cs, the early Christian Necropolis of Sopianae features 4th-century tombs, underground burial chambers, above-ground memorial chapels and Christian murals. At the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter in PĂ©cs, the exhibitions âGolden Age of Zsolnayâ and âPink Exhibitionâ focus on the family and factory history. The Ćs-DrĂĄva Visitor Centre near Szaporca combines an interactive exhibition with an agricultural demonstration area and three educational trails. Their themes are traditional agriculture, the Ćs-DrĂĄva Programme and wildlife along the Drava. These examples add to the picture of Baranya without suggesting that these attractions are located in Sellye itself.
