The exhibition at the Sásdi Történeti Téka gives the town a distinct cultural and historical focus. It combines ethnographic and local history topics with the history of industry, trade and railways. Also worth noting are the Roman Catholic church dating from 1796 and a memorial to those who fell in the First World War. Visitors considering a stay in Sásd can choose between local and transport history, sacred art and memorial sites.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

Sásd lies in the north of Baranya County, on Main Road 66, and is easily reached by both train and bus. The main road provides a geographical reference point; train and bus are two ways to get there. Check the connections that suit your travel date for your specific journey. When choosing where to stay, consider not only how you will get there but also what you would like to explore locally: Sásd’s historical themes range from railways to church art.

Exhibition and Local History

Registration is required to visit the local history exhibition at the Sásdi Történeti Téka. Its collection covers ethnographic and local history topics, as well as the history of local industry, trade and railways. Several facets of the town’s history are presented side by side, rather than focusing on a single subject.

Members of the Honismereti Szakkör organized the collection with the support of a museum professional. The members meet every two weeks. Their activities include collecting and organizing objects, writing a chronicle and running an exhibition. The group’s work therefore includes collection management, written local history and exhibition operations.

The exhibition space also has a specific development date: as part of the “Digitár” project, completed in 2012, a new space for the collection opened in the Téka building. This historical milestone adds insight into how the collection is presented to the story of its contents.

Church and Memorial Sites

The Roman Catholic church in Sásd is dedicated to Kisboldogasszony and was built in 1796 in the Zopf style. It is adorned with an altarpiece by Dorfmeister. A statue of Saint John of Nepomuk stands in the church garden. The year of construction and architectural style describe the church building; the altarpiece and garden statue add two specific works of art.

Another memorial site is Hősök kertje: a bronze statue stands in front of the chapel in memory of those who fell in the First World War. The memorial is the work of sculptor Károly Cser. Together with the church, it offers a glimpse of different forms of remembrance and religious art in Sásd.

Culture in the Wider Destination of Baranya

In the wider destination of Baranya, Pécs offers its own cultural and historical context. The early Christian necropolis of Sopianae includes decorated tombs from the 4th century, including underground burial chambers with above-ground memorial chapels and richly decorated Christian murals. At the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter, the exhibitions “Golden Age of Zsolnay,” “Pink Exhibition” and an exhibition on the family and factory history are part of the program. Activities for children include outdoor playgrounds, an interactive lab, a planetarium, the Bóbita Puppet Theatre, a ceramic painting workshop and classes at the Hercules Workshop. These themes broaden the picture of Baranya; Sásd’s own focus is on local history, railways, and local memorial and sacred sites.
