Since autumn 2022, the Míves Tojás Múzeum, the Szalma-Kincs-Tár and the Tájház have been located together in a courtyard at Kossuth Lajos utca 6. These three exhibitions provide Zengővárkony with a tangible cultural anchor; they are complemented by a village walk with storytelling stops and special visitor rules in the sweet chestnut forest.

Three exhibitions, two tickets

Two tickets are required for the three exhibitions: the Míves Tojás Múzeum has its own ticket, while the Tájház and Szalma-Kincs-Tár share one ticket. So, if you choose individual exhibitions, it is important to check which ticket group each belongs to. The shared ticket is valid for the Tájház and Szalma-Kincs-Tár, not the Míves Tojás Múzeum. Ticket arrangements may change, so check them locally before your visit.

On foot through the village and sweet chestnut forest

Vadkan Vili Sétálója leads through Zengővárkony to places in the village. At rest stops, you can listen to or read stories about Vili and Hungarian folk tales. The walk thus connects village locations with storytelling stops; the stories can be experienced in two ways. This distinguishes the walk from the sweet chestnut forest, where the main point for visitors is the rules on its use.

You can walk in the sweet chestnut forest of Zengővárkony, but you are not allowed to pick up chestnuts from the ground. The trees are privately owned. In addition, the entire sweet chestnut forest was placed under protection in 1974. Walking and gathering are therefore clearly distinct: you can explore the forest on foot, but you cannot take away the chestnuts lying on the ground. The protected status applies to the entire forest, not just individual trees or areas.

Culture with different timing considerations

During Holy Week, visitors to Zengővárkony can try traditional egg decorating, with help from local egg decorators. Holy Week is the relevant period for planning your trip. If your travel dates fall during this time, check the latest information about arrangements in advance.

If requested, a guided tour and explanations from the staff can also accompany a visit to the Szalma-Kincs-Tár. Tours are available on request, so you should not assume that a guide is provided automatically. If you would like these explanations, ask specifically and check the latest visitor information. Another local cultural feature is the late Baroque Zengővárkonyi Református Templom. Its late Baroque style adds an architectural accent alongside the exhibitions.

Culture in the wider destination of Branau

Those looking beyond the immediate area to the wider destination of Branau will find further cultural and historical attractions in Pécs. The early Christian necropolis of Sopianae includes decorated tombs from the 4th century. They were built as underground burial chambers with above-ground memorial chapels and adorned with richly detailed Christian wall paintings. Thus, early Christian funerary art takes center stage in Pécs, while the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter combines exhibitions on the history of the family and factory with “Golden Age of Zsolnay” and “Pink Exhibition.”

The Zsolnay Cultural Quarter also has a freely accessible outdoor area that visitors can enter and use free of charge during opening hours. Opening details may change, so check them before your visit. These cultural attractions belong to the wider destination of Branau; the exhibitions, village walk and sweet chestnut forest are the local highlights of Zengővárkony.
