In Baja Verapaz Department, a distinctive cultural gateway leads to Rabinal. The Rabinal Achí belongs to the Rabinal region; masks of the main characters, their costumes, music and live instrumentation shape the artistic character of its performance. If you are interested in performing arts, this context offers a tangible perspective on the region.

The Rabinal Achí has been passed down from generation to generation. A custodian preserves its material memory and continues to develop its living oral and written tradition. In this way, performance and continuing tradition stand side by side: the tradition encompasses both artistic expression and preservation and further development.

Rabinal: performance and memory

The Museo Comunitario de la Memoria Histórica de Rabinal offers another perspective on Rabinal. It was established in 2000 at the initiative of women and men who survived the CAI, to bring awareness to the memory of the more than 5,000 victims from the community of Rabinal in Baja Verapaz. For thematic context, Rabinal therefore offers two distinct approaches side by side: a performance tradition passed down through generations and a museum dedicated to memory.

Landscapes and protected nature

From the Mirador del valle de Rabinal, you can see the landscape of the Valle del Urram and Cerro Místico Kaj Yup. The natural scenery depends on the weather. The mountain is connected with the history and worship of the Achí people, giving the view a cultural dimension as well as a scenic one.

The Salto de Chilascó waterfall in Aldea San Rafael Chilascó has a drop of approximately 160 meters. The protected Biotopo del Quetzal lies between Alta Verapaz and Baja Verapaz. It preserves the habitat of the quetzal, Guatemala’s national bird. Its focus is therefore different from that of the mirador: here, habitat protection takes center stage, while the mirador offers a view with cultural significance.

In the wider destination of Guatemala

Other places in the wider destination of Guatemala offer their own cultural highlights. The ruins of Quirigua preserve 17 monuments carved between 426 and 810 AD; stelae and carved calendars document social, political and economic events of the Maya civilization. Antigua Guatemala was founded as Santiago de Guatemala in 1524. The city has preserved its 16th-century street plan and most of its architectural heritage. Its numerous churches and monasteries bear witness to the influence of the Christian Church on every aspect of city life during the colonial period.

Tikal National Park in Guatemala covers 57,600 hectares of wetlands, savanna, and tropical broadleaf and palm forests. Notable wildlife includes five cat species, including jaguars and pumas, several monkey species, anteaters, and more than 300 bird species.
