On the shore of a pond in Ravine Sable is the Anse-Bertrand birdwatching centre. It was established to observe birds in their natural habitat.

Birdwatching and behaviour

The Guadeloupe National Park has installed information panels and observation shelters along the trail. They allow visitors to learn about birds’ behaviour in their natural habitat without disturbing them. The two facilities have different purposes: the centre is for observation, while the panels and shelters provide information about the animals’ behaviour. For travellers interested in birdwatching, this creates a clear focus on habitat and behaviour.

Coastal formations and walks

Porte d’Enfer is a striking rock formation overlooking the Atlantic. The area is named after the strong currents that pass through it.

The Trace des Douaniers runs from Plage de la Porte d’Enfer to Pointe du Souffleur. This easy, rocky hike is marked in blue and yellow; the round trip covers 8 km and takes about three hours. At the La Grande Vigie cliff, a relatively short trail leads to the summit.

The hikes offer different time commitments: a marked, easy round trip taking around three hours, or a relatively short trail to the cliff summit. Trail conditions can change, so check them before setting out.

Views over the coast and fields

The Massioux viewpoint offers a 180-degree view over extensive sugarcane fields. Alongside the Atlantic view at Porte d’Enfer, there are two distinct landscapes to enjoy: the coastal formation overlooking the sea and the expansive fields of Massioux. If views are a priority when choosing where to go, you can choose between a coastal panorama and a field panorama.

Mangroves in the wider region

In the wider region, you can choose between an easy walk from Anse-Bertrand to Port-Louis and a beach walk through the mangroves. This habitat is home to brackish-water plants, small fish, crabs and various birds. This broadens the focus on nature beyond birdwatching at the pond: mangroves offer the chance to observe plants and small animals, too.

Mills and local history

There are 17 mills in the municipality of Anse-Bertrand; the best-known is Beaufond Mill. The number refers to the mill heritage across the entire municipality, while Beaufond is one specific example among them.

Saint-Denis Church was inaugurated on 9 October 2014, after construction work, on the feast day of its patron saint, Saint-Denis. The date links the inauguration to the patron saint and gives local history a specific point of reference.
