Lemos offers two clearly distinct focuses for planning a trip: churches and local history, and trails through the landscape. The places described are not all in the same location. When choosing a holiday apartment, it is therefore helpful to consider the location, trail starting point and stated time estimates separately. This way, you can decide whether the village itself, its churches or excursions in the surrounding area should shape your stay.

Churches between the village and the hill

Agia Paraskevi is in Lemos and dates from 1896. The three-aisled, timber-roofed basilica of Agios Ioannis is just outside the village on a hill and offers excellent views of the lake and the border with North Macedonia. The technical term “three-aisled” describes the church’s layout; the timber roof is another specific feature. At Agios Ioannis, church architecture meets views of the lake and the border. According to tradition, Agios Ioannis was built in 1862. In the past, a festival involving village residents was held outside the church.

Compare trails and hiking routes

A 6–7 km trail leads from Lemos to the lakeside forest and the delta of the Agios Germanos River; there are many opportunities for birdwatching along the way. If you are looking for hikes with comparable details, you can compare two routes. The Laimós–Lofos Agianni hiking trail starts in Lemos, crosses farmland and a small oak forest, and continues to the summit of Agios Ioannis Hill, which offers panoramic views. It is 5.2 km long, takes 1.5–2 hours and has a difficulty rating of 1/5. The Agios Germanos–Laimós trail is 5.1 km long; it is also listed as taking 1.5–2 hours and having a difficulty rating of 1/5. The two hikes differ little in length and have the same stated time and difficulty ratings, but lead to different endpoints. A walk leads from the edge of the village to Agios Ioannis Hill, which is about 1,300 m from the village outskirts. This distance describes the hill’s location; it is not the length of the 5.2 km hiking trail. The measurements therefore answer different questions: How long is the named route, and approximately how far is the hill from the edge of the village?

Match your accommodation search to your travel plans

This provides a practical guide for searching for a holiday apartment: first decide whether your stay should focus on a location in the village, the churches or an excursion into the surrounding area. Agia Paraskevi is in Lemos; the basilica is just outside the village, and the hiking trails have different starting points and destinations. If you are planning a route by time, the two hikes, both listed as taking 1.5–2 hours, are comparable. For birdwatching, the 6–7 km trail heads towards the lakeside forest and delta. This way, you can tailor your holiday apartment search to your plans and consider the different destinations as separate travel interests.
