At Lake Mikri Prespa: Island and History
At Lake Mikri Prespa, a 630-metre pedestrian bridge connects the island of Agios Achilleios with the opposite shore. The island is home to the ruins of a 10th-century Byzantine basilica, as well as the 15th-century Monastery of Panagia Porfyra. The crossing, island, and historic buildings form a clear landmark for the Prespa region: landscape and history come together here, while the buildings belong to different eras. The span from the 10th to the 15th century makes this historical distinction immediately tangible.
Lakeside Landscapes and Prespa Experiences
Six natural lakes shape the landscape of the Florina region: Vegoritida, Petron, Zazari, Cheimaditida, Lake Megali Prespa, and Lake Mikri Prespa. Prespa National Park is of outstanding ecological importance and is home to rare plant and animal species. On Lake Mikri Prespa, you can kayak through reed beds; boat trips from Psarades on Lake Megali Prespa take you to the lake’s hermitages and rock paintings. These water-based experiences offer different highlights: kayaking focuses on paddling through the reeds, while boat trips focus on destinations around the lake.
From a Hellenistic City to Modern Art
The city of Florina can also be explored through its different historical layers. The Archaeological Site of the Hellenistic City preserves house foundations, storage vessels, hearths, and iron workshops from a city founded in the 4th century BC in the Kingdom of Lygistida. The Archaeological Museum of Florina presents the region’s history from the Neolithic period to the Byzantine era. The Museum of Contemporary Art of Florina offers a different historical focus: it preserves more than 700 works created after 1950. Archaeological traces, the region’s long history, and contemporary art thus stand side by side as different ways to explore Florina’s culture.
Wine from Amyntaio and Prespa Beans
Amyntaio is home to Greece’s highest-altitude wine-growing zone and is considered one of the country’s leading wine regions. Wine tourism includes visits to traditional and modern wineries, tours of production areas and cellars, and tastings centred on PDO Amyntaio Xinomavro. The regional cuisine also has a clear connection to its place of origin: the Prespa bean has a protected geographical indication and is a key part of local cuisine. Wine traditions and beans therefore offer two different perspectives on regional produce—one through wineries and tastings, the other through a protected local food product.
Wildlife Watching in Forest Areas
Outside Nymfaio, the ARCTUROS Bear Sanctuary is located on a specially designed 50-acre forest site. There, visitors can observe bears cared for and protected by ARCTUROS. The Wolf and Lynx Sanctuary in Agrapidia, by contrast, is located in a 70-acre oak forest and offers the opportunity to observe protected wild animals. The two sites therefore differ both in their landscape setting and in their respective focus.
Autumn Fair and December Fire Traditions
The calendar also offers a variety of highlights. Every year, Amyntaio holds a trade fair on the first weekend in October, with market stalls, brass bands, and a lively social atmosphere. In December, the neighbourhoods of Amyntaio gather around the Tsiri-Varvara bonfires, with bean soup, wine, tsipouro, and dancing. In Florina, the Christmas bonfires light up the city on the night of 23 December, accompanied by music, dancing, local specialities, and communal celebrations. Autumn market festivities and December’s communal fire traditions thus offer different occasions that may be worth considering when planning your trip. If you are travelling specifically for a festival, check the exact event dates in advance.
Activities Along River Paths and Mountain Trails
Mountain biking routes in Amyntaio pass through lakeside landscapes, forests, and fertile hills. The walking trails of the Florina region range from riverside paths to extremely challenging mountain trails. This range is relevant when choosing a route: plan according to the stated difficulty of the hike in question. Vigla–Pisoderi Ski Centre is 19 kilometres from Florina. Paragliding flights take off above Prespa National Park. These activities add further options for a range of interests to the lakeside discoveries and cultural attractions.
