Stournareika brings together mountain scenery, historical connections to the area, and a range of activities. The village itself and the nearby settlement of Kastania have different points of interest from the surrounding area, where mountains, views, and the locality of Psarro shape the landscape. A marked route and trout fishing add to the activities on offer. This makes it easy to understand the destination in terms of landscape, history, and things to do.

Mountains and Views

The mountains around Stournareika include Avgo, Kydonia, Karatzouni, Sfendamos, Pyrgakia, Loupata, Mavropouli, Boziaris-Pikoraros, Petroskales, and Fourka. They lie at elevations of about 1,200 to 2,000 meters and offer scenic views. The approximate 800-meter range gives an idea of the different elevations in the surrounding mountains.

From a suitable viewpoint in the area, you can see the Thessalian Plain, Lake Plastiras, the Tzoumerka Mountains, and the Agrafa Mountains. The panorama takes in a plain, a lake, and two mountain ranges. It complements views of the mountains around the village with a perspective on several types of landscape. For travel planning, this is a different focus from the individual mountain names: here, the emphasis is on views across the wider area.

Historical Connections

The locality of Psarro lies just outside Stournareika. It is named after the armatolos Kapetan Psarros, who was killed there in 1821. The name links the place to a specific person and historical event. Psarro thus offers a distinct connection to the area's history, alongside the landscape around Stournareika.

The settlement of Kastania (Rahovo), which belongs to the village, has a different historical focus: the small church of Saint John the Baptist contains wall paintings dating from 1663/64. The settlement celebrates on August 29 at the small church. The paintings' date and the recurring festival mark different points in time; if you are planning a stay around the celebration, August 29 is a specific date to plan around. If you want to travel specifically for the festival, check that the date fits your travel plans.

Local Sights and Activities

There are two watermills in Stournareika. They are located in the village itself, unlike the mountains and viewpoint in the surrounding area. Along with the wall paintings in Kastania, they offer another specific local attraction alongside the broader landscape.

Stournareika–Paramero is a marked route. It is a separate planning option alongside the historical and landscape attractions. If you plan to take the route, check its current condition and accessibility in advance.

Trout fishing is possible in the area at “Pigidaki,” a little below the Goura springs. This location connects the activity with a specific name and a reference point in the landscape. If you plan to fish, check access and the applicable conditions in advance.
