Santa Maria lies at the northern tip of Paros and combines a long, organized sandy beach with a local hiking trail and a sensitive wetland. Water sports, the route from Ambelas and the protection of the natural area offer different focal points. When choosing, it therefore matters whether you want to focus mainly on the beach and water sports, or also include a hike and the landscape.

Beach, Water Sports and Trails

The open landscape, fine sand and crystal-clear water define Santa Maria. At the northern tip of the island, the area attracts water sports enthusiasts. The long sandy beach is organized and offers umbrellas, sun loungers and water sports; availability may vary by season. There is also a diving center and beach bars nearby, forming part of the summer scene. Their offerings may vary seasonally.

A local hiking trail leads from Ambelas to Santa Maria. Those who enjoy exploring on foot as well as spending time at the beach may consider it as a separate activity. It is advisable to check the current trail conditions before setting out.

The Santa Maria wetland has been enclosed with rock embankments to prevent uncontrolled access and protect its sensitive ecosystem. A municipal notice dated April 30, 2026, refers to the Joint Ministerial Decision prohibiting uses such as parking vehicles. When spending time in Santa Maria, being mindful of this wetland is part of getting your bearings, alongside the beach.

More Cultural Attractions on Paros

Cultural sites on the island of Paros offer a different focus. Panagia Ekatontapiliani lies in the northeast of Parikia, near the port, and is one of Greece’s most important early Christian monuments. In the southern part of the church is the ancient baptistery dating from the 4th century, considered the oldest and best-preserved baptistery in the Orthodox East. Ekatontapiliani also houses the Byzantine Museum of Parikia. Its collection includes rare icons, wood carvings and other religious relics from the Byzantine era and the period of Ottoman rule.

The Kastro of Parikia preserves the ruins of a Venetian castle built from columns of ancient temples and other architectural elements. In Lefkes stands Agia Triada, a listed church building constructed from Parian marble in 1835. Its three-aisled basilica features a raised central nave and two bell towers. These architectural differences offer a distinct cultural perspective on Paros, alongside Santa Maria’s beach and water sports.

Museums on Paros add their own themes to this picture. The Sculpture Museum of sculptor and engraver N. Peratinos in Marpissa displays 192 of his works. The B. Skiadas Museum of Cycladic Folklore presents the history and traditions of Paros and the Aegean. In Naoussa, the Folklore Museum displays the collection of Doctor Othon Kaparis, as well as a library, an extensive photo archive and some archaeological finds.
