Parasporos can be understood in terms of the nearby beach and the wider range of things to do on Paros. This lets you combine a coastal stay with the cultural and natural attractions of the broader destination, without treating the different locations as one and the same.

The beach and its location

The wide sandy beach at Parasporos is lined with bushy tamarisk trees. On the western side of Paros, just outside Paroikia, it offers an unobstructed view of the Aegean Sea. The water is described as crystal clear and very clean. In a list of beaches on Paros, Parasporos is placed farther south; Livadia, Krios, Marcelo, and Agios Fokas are also mentioned in this context.

There are plenty of sun loungers and umbrellas on the beach. As availability may change, check current availability before your visit. It is helpful to distinguish between traveling by bus and using your own vehicle: the bus service goes as far as the public road, and the beach is also accessible by private vehicle. Across the wider destination of Paros, Parasporos is considered easy to reach by car or bicycle.

Paros: Culture and architectural history

On Paros, the broader destination, Panagia Ekatontapiliani is located in the northeast of Parikia, near the port. It is one of the most important early Christian monuments in Greece. The baptistery, dating from the 4th century, is in the southern part of the church. It is considered the oldest and best-preserved baptistery in the Orthodox East. The Byzantine Museum of Parikia is also housed in the church complex. Its collection includes rare icons, wood carvings, and other religious relics from the Byzantine period and the period of Ottoman rule.

Paros’s architectural history is also reflected in a variety of forms. The Kastro of Parikia preserves the ruins of a Venetian castle built from columns of ancient temples and other architectural elements. In Lefkes stands the listed Agia Triada, a church built in 1835 from Parian marble. Its three-aisled basilica has a raised central nave and two bell towers. Thus, reused ancient building materials and a 19th-century church represent distinct architectural themes on the island.

Paros: Nature and events

The Paros Environmental and Cultural Park brings together nature and cultural offerings: its network of hiking trails is seven kilometers long; it also has a 700-seat amphitheater for concerts and performances, as well as organized and unspoiled beaches. Since 2009, the park has hosted the “Festival at the Park,” a summer program of cultural, sporting, and environmental events. The Alyki Cultural Festival is a separate event: it takes place every June, lasts three days, and features events in Alyki on Paros.

Another natural attraction is the Valley of the Butterflies on Paros, considered a rare biotope for Jersey tiger moths, which can be seen there in large numbers on tree trunks. In Aliki, the island’s most important wetland, hiking tours, nature walks, and cycling tours are organized for foreign visitors. These distinctions can help you choose a focus: the beach and coastal views at Parasporos, architectural history in Parikia and Lefkes, or nature and cultural activities elsewhere on Paros.
