Lipsi combines beaches with varied landscapes, churches and archaeological traces, as well as its own wine-making tradition. When planning your trip, it is worth considering the coast’s distinctive features: the island has sandy and pebbly beaches, coves and rocky stretches. There are also cultural sights to visit and the option of taking a boat to other islands.

Beaches with varied landscapes

Kimissi is a secluded pebbly beach with aquamarine water. Access conditions may vary seasonally. Facing south, Christos is distinguished by multicoloured pebbles, clear, untamed water and a jetty suitable for sunbathing and diving. Elena consists of coves naturally shaped by rocks and pebbles. The last, larger beach there can accommodate larger groups and is the only one with natural shade from the rock.

If you are looking for sand, you will find it at Katsadia and Papandria: Katsadia is sheltered from the wind, with shallow water and large shade-giving trees. Papandria is a cove with sand and a few pebbles, and calm, crystal-clear water. Platis Gialos is also a cove with shallow, aquamarine water, where tamarisk trees grow. Hohlakoura combines white pebbles and aquamarine water with a cave that provides shade. Monodendri, meanwhile, is a pebbly beach with a single juniper tree growing on the rock. Kamares stands out for its rugged, secluded coastline with large pebbles and rocks.

These beach descriptions give you specific differences to consider, since not every beach has the same character. Almost all the beaches are accessible by land and can be reached on foot in no more than an hour; trail conditions may vary. A paved footpath passes the Holy Church of Kimisi tis Theotokou on the way to the Temple of Ano Kimisi.

Boat trips and island views

The 5 Island Trip is a daily boat tour departing from Lipsi. The route includes the white-pebble beach of Aspronissi, the Makronissi caves and the aquamarine waters of Tiganakia. The sparsely populated islands of Arki and Marathi are also among the destinations. Check the current operating days in advance if you want to plan the tour as a fixed part of your trip.

On Lipsi itself, rugged coastlines and low elevations meet terraces, olive groves, chapels and vineyards. The 24 islets around Lipsi also shape the surrounding natural environment: they are home to protected Mediterranean monk seals, sea turtles and rare bird species such as Eleonora’s falcons and yellow-legged gulls. The flora and fauna are also mentioned in connection with the Natura 2000 network.

Churches, history and museum

Notable churches on Lipsi include Panagia tou Harou, Pano Kimissi, Kato Kimissi and Agios Ioannis Theologos. The ruins of an acropolis and the surrounding tombs are located on Kastro Hill. Above the village stands an old windmill made of natural stone and mortar, which is quite well preserved. These places reveal different aspects of the island’s history, from archaeological remains to a landmark building above the village.

In Kouselio, the remains of an ancient settlement dating from the Classical period to the pre-Christian era have been preserved. An ancient marble inscription is incorporated into the walls of the Church of Panagia of Kouselio. In the main town, the Nikiforio Ecclesiastical-Folklore Museum adds to this picture of the island: its collection includes icons from the 16th and 17th centuries, ecclesiastical vestments embroidered with gold thread, crosses from the 17th century, traditional costumes, everyday objects, coins from various periods and a small archaeological collection.

Local products and getting there

Lipsi has a wine-making tradition; one of its characteristic products is a red sweet wine made from the Fokiano grape variety. Local cheeses include Touloumotyri and Myzithra. At the harbour, tavernas serve fresh fish and seafood brought in by local fishing boats. In summer, festivals celebrating the wine-making tradition and sweet wine are part of island tradition; traditional songs and dances accompany them. Ask locally what is currently on offer.

In summer, ferries connect Lipsi with Piraeus twice a week and with Rhodes, Kos, Kalymnos, Leros, Patmos and Samos daily. As routes and schedules may change, check connections before travelling. This lets you plan your beach choices, cultural visits and travel arrangements separately, without assuming that every stay should have the same focus.
