Grikos, also known as Groikos and formerly called Agrokia, lies in the southeast of the island. The place began as a picturesque fishing village and developed into a modern coastal settlement with extensive tourist infrastructure. This transformation offers a first point of reference when choosing a destination: Grikos can be understood both through its origins and through its present-day character as a coastal settlement.

The Bay and Landscape of Grikos

The Bay of Grikos was named one of the most beautiful bays in the world by the international organisation “Most Beautiful Bays in the World.” The landscape includes reddish-pink cliffs shaped by the sea, vineyards, golden fields and small houses. The scenery thus brings together several elements: shaped rock formations as well as fields, vineyards and buildings. When planning a stay, you can therefore get a sense of Grikos not only from the bay’s award but also from these specific features of the landscape.

From the bay, you can enjoy views of the rock of Kalikatsou and Petra Beach. There are also various viewpoints within the settlement from which visitors can see the distinctive rock. Kalikatsou is also called Petra, Greek for “the rock.” When finding your bearings, it is worth distinguishing between the two names: Petra is both an alternative name for the rock and the name of the beach visible from the bay. This helps keep the viewpoint, rock formation and beach distinct as separate points of reference.

Beach and Bay

Part of the beach in the Bay of Grikos is organised. This refers to part of the beach; it does not describe the entire beach as organised. As a further specific aspect of the bay, this complements the landscape and viewpoints when getting a sense of the area. The Gulf of Grikos also offers the opportunity to anchor in the roadstead. Tragonisi shelters it from the winds, although actual anchoring conditions may vary. The sheltered location and the opportunity to anchor are part of the character of the gulf, but do not guarantee suitable conditions at all times.

Connection to the Port of Skala

Grikos is connected to the Port of Skala by a paved coastal road; regular transport services also connect the settlement with the port. For planning purposes, this provides a specific link between the coastal settlement and the port. Before your trip, check the connection available for your travel dates if you plan to base your arrival or onward journey on it. The road and regular services are two distinct points of reference: one describes the road connection, the other the regular transport service. Together with the bay, viewpoints and coastal character, this information can help you assess Grikos as a possible destination.
