Karyes lies at 950 m at the foot of Mount Parnon, surrounded by chestnut and walnut trees and on the border with the prefecture of Arcadia. A distinctive cultural landmark complements this mountain setting: in 1983, residents built a replica of part of the Erechtheion featuring the Caryatids, placed it in a prominent location and made it the symbol of the village. Two distinct interests thus come together in Karyes: its local landmark and a setting shaped by forest and walking trails.

Caryatids and a Specific Walk

The replica represents part of the Erechtheion, not the entire structure. Its significance for Karyes also lies in its local history: residents built it, and it became the symbol of the village. Those interested in culture will find a clear, site-specific theme here, distinct from the scenic features of the trails.

One described walk covers 4.8 km, passing an old stone fountain near Sakali and the chapel of Agios Konstantinos, which sits on a pine-covered hill. Walnut and cherry orchards are also part of the route, which ends in the paved village square. The fountain, chapel, orchards and endpoint give the walk a variety of points of interest. Its length and named stops offer a clear reference for anyone interested in this route.

Forest and Walking Trails

The forest of Karyes extends across the northeastern part of the municipality. Visitors can explore it on the marked Caryatides Trails. This offers a choice of different trail experiences: the described walk, with its set distance and stops, and exploring the forest on marked trails.

The European long-distance path E4 also passes through Karyes, offering a different scale from the locally described routes. On hiking route No. 2, the “Shepherd’s Path,” there is a small group of three to four centuries-old oaks. On Route No. 7, the “Oak Path,” there is an oak called “βαλανιδιά του Αη Θανάση.” The references to trees therefore differ: the Shepherd’s Path is associated with a group of old oaks, while the Oak Path features a single named oak.

Other named trees can be found at the Monastery of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, also known as Panagia: there, plane trees are called the “Plane Trees of Menelaos.” Together with the oaks along the trails, this site draws attention to trees in specific locations, while the forest as a whole offers its own sense of place.

Lanes and Village Square

Alongside the forest and walking trails, the village itself offers places to explore. In Karyes, you can stroll through traditional lanes lined with stone houses. The paved square of Agios Andreas offers another local point of interest: a centuries-old plane tree stands there, and visitors can enjoy a coffee. The lanes and square add a village theme to the scenic trail experiences. You can choose among culture, a walk with named stops, marked forest trails and impressions of the village as different areas of focus.
