The small traditional settlement of Pikoulianika lies at an altitude of 600 metres. From Pikoulianika, expansive views stretch across the Sparta Valley, Parnonas and the castle town of Mystras. The Laconian plain, Taygetos and the Evrotas River are also among the sights. If you are considering Pikoulianika as a base for accommodation, you can use the views, mountain trails and local history as specific criteria when planning your trip.

Springs and Traditions in Pikoulianika

Springs with varying flows of water emerge at several places in Pikoulianika. The largest spring lies at the easternmost point of the settlement, in a square called “Kyparissi”. Near the spring are the remains of buildings which, according to oral tradition, are connected with the legend “The Kyparissi (Cypress) of Mystras”. At Kyparissi, a named natural landmark and a local storytelling tradition come together.

Local History and Names

The parish church of Ag. Theodoroi in Pikoulianika dates from 1828. The old school building in the centre of the settlement serves as a small history museum. The place name itself also points to a family history: Pikoulianika derives from the family name Pikoula, and the family shaped the area from 1700 to 1900. The parish church, the old school building’s role as a museum and the family connection thus offer different points of reference for exploring the area’s history.

West of Pikoulianika lies Mount Latzinikos, at an altitude of 1,591 metres. Its name is of Slavic origin; in antiquity, the mountain was called Evoras. The nearby mountain’s history of names is a distinct thread alongside the history of the settlement. While Pikoula explains the origin of the place name, Evoras is the ancient name for Latzinikos.

Mountain Trails and a Route to Mystras

A mountain trail to the summit of Koufovouni, at 1,850 metres, starts in the centre of Pikoulianika. The Pikoulianika–Kanelakia–Koufovouni route follows a dirt road and then a trail from the road that runs through the settlement, first reaching Gaïdourorachi at 1,392 metres and then continuing to the summit. Another route from the road through Pikoulianika leads about 950 metres northeast to the Upper Gate of the Castle of Mystras. In a direct comparison of elevations, Latzinikos to the west, at 1,591 metres, is 259 metres lower than the summit of Koufovouni, at 1,850 metres.

Your destination can help you choose between them: the route to the Upper Gate leads to the Castle of Mystras, while the mountain trails lead to the heights mentioned above. Check local conditions before setting out; conditions and access on the route to the Upper Gate may vary.
