Elika offers several distinct perspectives for planning a trip: the coast, local history and views. Marathias is part of Elika and has a sandy beach; churches and a stone primary school shape the area’s architectural history. Agios Mamas adds the perspective of an agricultural settlement, while the Chapel of Agios Eustratios nearby is associated with a viewpoint.

Coastal appeal in Marathias

Marathias is a coastal settlement that belongs to Elika and has a sandy beach. For travelers interested in the coast, this provides a clear connection to the area: the beach is in Marathias, while the churches and school offer other insights into local history. This makes it possible to consider the coast and architectural history as distinct areas of interest. Marathias represents the specific connection to the beach, while the historic buildings offer a separate perspective on Elika.

Churches with different architectural histories

The new Church of Agios Charalambos stands in the center of Elika. Construction began in 1912 and was completed in 1958; the building was supported by the Elikians’ association in America, “Agios Charalambos.” The older church of the same name is near the first settlement of Maravelianika. Residents built it through their own labor in 1850. The two churches can be compared by their dates and the circumstances of their construction: the older one reflects the work of local residents, while the later building was supported by the association. The years mark distinct milestones: 1850, the year the old church was built; 1912, the start of construction; and 1958, its completion.

The Church of Saints Constantine and Helen in Elika adds an architectural perspective to these histories: it has three aisles and is dedicated to three parts. This brings different features together: the dates and building contexts of the two churches of Agios Charalambos, and the layout and dedication of this church.

Settlement and school

Agios Mamas is also part of Elika and is a traditional agricultural settlement. Here, the focus is not on a single building, but on the character of a settlement. Another historical point of reference is the stone primary school in Elika. It was founded in 1925 at the initiative of Michail Manolitsi. The school broadens the focus beyond the churches; its founding year and the stated initiative offer two specific points of reference for local history. Elika can therefore also be explored through its settlements and a school building.

Chapel and viewpoint

The post-Byzantine Chapel of Agios Eustratios lies to the northeast, in the area near Elika. It stands on a hill at an elevation of 210 meters. Above the chapel is a viewpoint overlooking the Laconian Gulf and the beaches of Panaritis, Marathias and Limnes. The chapel is defined by its location and historical classification, while the viewpoint looks out over the gulf and the named beaches. Those who include views in their plans alongside local history will find a distinct point of interest here near Elika.
