The Island, Getting There and the Sea Cave

Together with the neighboring islets, Meganisi lies in the Inner Ionian Archipelago, bordered by the Ionian islands of Lefkada, Ithaca and Kefalonia, as well as the Greek mainland. Meganisi is the largest island in the Lefkada-Prigkiponisia island group. Bereta lies at the southern end of Meganisi. The beach is accessible only by boat and consists of a narrow strip of pebbles; its distinctive feature is the horizontal rock formations that extend into the sea. Access varies considerably: Korakofolia can be reached via the short path from the end of Fanari, while Bereta is accessible only by boat.

Vathy is Meganisi’s main harbor and a picturesque fishing village. The village scene includes a small beach and a harbor with traditional fishing boats and trawlers. In Katomeri, you’ll find narrow streets, whitewashed houses and a central square with plane trees. A local bakery offers the chance to sample the island’s famous pastries. Spartochori sits on a hill overlooking the Ionian Sea. Its traditional coffee houses and tavernas are ideal for dinner or a cocktail with a view of the sunset. Every year on September 15, worshippers and visitors gather at the Church of Agios Vissarion in Vathy for a festive liturgy; processions make their way through the village streets.
