Cultural attractions in Lefkada offer a range of highlights: Old Town architecture, libraries, art collections and churches. Nearby, you will also find Faneromeni Monastery; the harbour’s visitor services include hotels and excursion boats. This lets you plan your stay around your cultural interests and preferred way of spending the day, without having to turn all the attractions into a fixed itinerary.

Libraries and visual arts

The Public Library of Lefkada is housed in a neoclassical building in the heart of the Old Town. Neoclassical architecture draws on classical models, so a visit to the library can also be a chance to explore the town’s architectural history. Its location in the heart of the Old Town also places it in a different setting from the cultural attractions near the town hall or harbour.

The Haramogleia Library holds works by around 800 Lefkadian authors, as well as studies about Lefkada. Its collection brings together local authorship and research about the area. The Municipal Gallery has a different focus: it is located on the ground floor of the town hall and contains paintings by 100 Greek and foreign artists. These artists exhibited their works for 20 years in the exhibition halls of the Lefkada Municipal Cultural Centre. Those interested in literature and studies will therefore find a different subject here from the gallery’s collection of paintings.

Old Town, churches and historic buildings

Lefkada’s Old Town has medieval features. Two churches offer further historical points of reference: Agios Spyridon Church stands on the central square and was built in 1685. Agios Nikolaos Church is in the centre and was rebuilt in 1830. The dates mark different phases of construction: the building of one church and the reconstruction of the other.

The Folklore Museum of ORFEA is housed in a traditional building that was once a mansion. It is located on the central market street near the main square. The private Phonograph Museum is also on the central market street. The two venues have different thematic focuses; the Folklore Museum also stands out for the building’s former use as a mansion. If you would like to visit a museum or library indoors, check in advance whether visits are possible at the venue in question.

Exhibitions, the harbour and Faneromeni

The Theodoros Stamos Art Hall at the Lefkada Municipal Cultural Centre hosts annual exhibitions of painting, sculpture, printmaking and photography. The exhibition programme therefore extends beyond painting. If you would like to plan your visit around a particular exhibition, check the specific dates in advance.

Lefkada harbour offers numerous visitor services, including hotels and boats for day trips to the surrounding islands. If you are planning a boat trip, check the specific departure information before making firm plans for the day. This part of your trip planning is distinct from visiting the town’s cultural attractions: it is about a possible day out on the water, not a fixed programme with particular destinations or departure times.

Faneromeni Monastery lies about 3 km outside Lefkada and is considered an important place of pilgrimage. The Feast of the Holy Spirit is celebrated there. If you would like to combine your stay with this festival, check the specific date before making plans. A visit to the monastery thus adds a religious focus in the surrounding area to the attractions in town.
