Katavolos is a coastal settlement on Corfu’s northeastern coast, surrounded by green hills. A few houses with sea views stand on the hills. When planning your stay, in addition to the coastal location, consider the characteristics of Krouzeri Beach, the activities available there, and the walk from the bus stop to the beach.

Krouzeri Beach: Pebbles, dimensions, and activities

At Krouzeri Beach, both the beach and the seabed are covered with small pebbles. The beach faces southeast, is 350 metres long, and has an average width of 10 metres. Swimming and water sports are possible; pedal boats and motorboats are also available to rent. This gives beach days several distinct options: swimming, water sports, or renting a boat. If the boat option is important to your plans, check what is currently available locally, as services and activities may change.

Taking the bus to the beach

Green Bus routes A4, A5, and A12 stop on the main road in Katavolos. From there, it is a 500-metre walk to Krouzeri Beach. The stop is therefore not directly on the beach; getting from the bus to the water involves a walk. If you are planning to visit the beach using these routes, allow for this stretch. Routes and service patterns may change; check current transport information before travelling.

Corfu also offers cultural and scenic highlights. Corfu Old Town has preserved almost all of its historic urban fabric; its buildings date from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. Together with its two fortresses, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A digital guide to the Old Town, described in 2023, is aimed at residents and visitors and offers high-quality audiovisual material about more than 80 sights. Check that it is available before using it.

The Museum of Asian Art in the Old Town houses more than 11,000 objects from China, Japan, India, the Himalayas, and Central Asia. It can be reached from Corfu Port by bus route 2 on the Mantouki–Kanoni route; check the current timetable before travelling. The Archaeological Museum of Corfu displays the Gorgoneion pediment of the great Temple of Artemis. It was created in 585 BC and excavated in 1911 near the Monastery of Aghioi Theodoroi. Through artefacts and documents, the permanent exhibition of the Kapodistrias Museum presents the history of Corfu, Europe, and Greece through the life of Greece’s first governor.

For hiking, ancient paths in Corfu’s municipal unit of Achilleion wind through the forested mountains of Agii Deka, Stavros, and Garouna. The 180-kilometre Corfu Trail passes through several settlements; Benitses is one of its 13 day-stage locations. The villages in the municipal unit of Achilleion also host numerous festivals and folk festivals, as well as cultural events organised by the municipality. The individual programmes vary.
