In Xilagani, the history of a place of work has a tangible counterpart at the Folklore Museum: the collection of the Xylagani Folklore Museum is housed in a building that served as a grain mill. Three pairs of millstones stand in the exhibition in their original working positions. The building and the exhibits therefore share the same theme, but can be seen from two perspectives—as a place where work once took place and as objects on display. This gives a culture-focused stay in Xilagani a clear starting point.

A building with a milling history

The building was constructed in 1936 and served as a grain mill run by the G. Ouzounopoulos and S. O. Atzemian families until the early 1970s. The operation was then moved to Alexandroupoli. The year it was built, the family names, and the relocation provide specific historical reference points for its former use. This is more than just a date when it comes to understanding the museum: the collection is housed in a building whose own history is shaped by milling work. In this way, the collection’s location is linked to a specific chapter in Xylagani’s working history.

Millstones in their original working positions

The exhibition displays three pairs of millstones in their original working positions. These positions make the details especially meaningful: you encounter the stones not just as individual objects, but can relate them to the building’s former function. This draws attention to how specific tools belong to a grain mill. If you prefer to explore technical history through objects rather than abstract dates, this display offers a clearly defined focus.

An educational program for school groups

The 60-minute educational program “ΙΣΝΑΦΙΑ” is intended for school groups in the fifth and sixth grades of primary school and takes place in the museum’s exhibition area. It introduces students to the professions and working people of Xylagani. To do so, objects displayed in the museum are shown in reconstructed working environments. The focus is therefore not only on individual objects, but also on how they relate to professions and activities. The reconstructed environments place the objects in their working context, distinguishing this approach from viewing the millstones in their original positions. Compared with the three pairs of millstones, the focus shifts from a specific installation to the professions and working people of Xylagani. For a school group, the one-hour duration is a practical element to include in your planning. If you are planning to attend, confirm the date and availability with the museum in advance.

The museum café

The museum café first opened on 31 May 1996 for older visitors from Xilagani. It is considered a meeting place for the local community and a place where museum visitors can sample local products. This adds a different perspective to the history of milling: here, the focus is on gathering as a community and on tasting. If you would like to include the café in your visit, check in advance to confirm its current opening status.
