Planning a trip to Rhodope can start with several themes: a museum building designed by Aris Konstantinidis, an ancient theatre in an archaeological setting, a distinctive freshwater lake and beaches offering various activities. For planning purposes, it helps to organise these themes according to your preferred focus. Those who want to make architecture or early history their priority will find different starting points from those planning a day by the water. The places below show how these focuses differ.
Architecture and archaeological sites
The Archaeological Museum of Komotini is housed in a building designed by Aris Konstantinidis. The museum can therefore be viewed both as an archaeological site and through the architecture of its own building. Near Maronia, the ancient theatre lies within the archaeological site by the Kambana findspot, framed by olive trees and pines. Here, both the archaeological setting and the vegetation form part of the theatre’s surroundings. Two different approaches to cultural history thus stand side by side: the design of a museum building and an ancient theatre in an archaeological setting framed by trees.
At Petrota, too, an archaeological connection meets a route to the beach. The path to Petrota Beach passes the prehistoric acropolis of Petrota. The megalithic monument is also known as the “Rock of Petrota”. Both names refer to the same place, not to two different structures. If you would like to include an archaeological theme alongside beach activities, you can take this route into account when making your choice.
Lake and coastal landscape
Lake Ismarida is considered the most important habitat in Rhodope and one of the rarest shallow freshwater lakes. Its average depth is 1 m. This average should not be taken to mean that the lake is exactly one metre deep everywhere. If the current ecological condition matters to you, check it separately.
Along Rhodope’s southwestern coast, sandy beaches and deep blue water shape the landscape; overall, the area is easily accessible to everyone. The lake and coast therefore represent different waterscapes: a shallow freshwater lake on the one hand, and a beach-lined coastline on the other. This distinction can help you choose the focus of your trip without reducing both landscapes to a single type of water experience.
Choose beach days by activity
Petrota Beach is suitable for swimming, games on the shore and exploring the varied seabed. The range of activities thus extends from spending time on the shore to looking beneath the water’s surface. At Molyvoti Beach, underwater swimming and fishing are suitable activities. In comparison, Petrota offers a mix of swimming, shore games and seabed exploration, while Molyvoti is suited to underwater swimming and fishing. This makes it easier to choose based on the activity you have in mind, rather than grouping both places under the general term “beach”.
