Ross-On-Wye combines a striking position above the Wye Valley with historic routes, buildings and activities on the River Wye. When planning your visit, you can choose different focuses: views and landscape, local history, walking or cycling routes, and seasonal offerings. This lets you organise your discoveries around your interests without having to turn them into a fixed itinerary.

Sandstone Cliff and Wye Valley

Ross-On-Wye stands on a rugged sandstone cliff overlooking the Wye Valley. Views and landscape are therefore among the defining features of a stay here.

The Prospect, a viewpoint in Ross-On-Wye, was created by John Kyrle. The Wye Valley Walk also descends into the town and reaches The Prospect. Those interested in this route will therefore find a specific point of reference in the town.

The Riverside Arboretum, established in 2019, lies along the River Wye. The linear planting is one mile long and includes 163 trees. Its riverside setting offers a different landscape perspective from the view from the sandstone cliff.

History and Architecture in the Town

The Market House was built from local red sandstone between 1650 and 1654. The Ross-on-Wye Market is held beneath the historic building twice a week, on Thursdays and Saturdays. Stalls offer fresh produce, crafts, plants and food. The market charter was granted by King Stephen in the 12th century. As market dates can change, check the current schedule before your visit.

The two-mile Ross-on-Wye Heritage Trail starts at the Market House. The route passes historic and architecturally significant places marked with blue plaques. In the wider townscape, the tower of the parish church of St Mary the Virgin rises above the town. Built in 1833, the Gazebo Tower is considered an example of the Picturesque style; the pseudo-Gothic town walls are also attributed to this style, which was popular with early visitors.

The Wye Tour offers another historical perspective: in the 18th century, the vicar of Ross developed it as a river journey from Ross-On-Wye to Chepstow. The John Kyrle Circular Walk, in turn, is associated with John Kyrle, a 17th-century philanthropist known as “The Man of Ross”. These two connections tell different stories: one is about the development of a river journey, the other about a figure in local history.

Routes and Activities to Suit Your Interests

The Ross-on-Wye Riverside & Town Trail is mostly level and suitable for families and people with good mobility. The Heritage Trail, by contrast, focuses on historic and architectural sites; it is two miles long and starts at the Market House. The information about these two routes offers different points of reference for choosing, without suggesting that the same characteristics apply to every route.

Cycling routes also offer a range of options: Ross-On-Wye has routes from challenging off-road trails to easier family routes. The canoe launch site is at Long Acre, just off Wye Street. Those interested in fishing can get day tickets through the Ross-on-Wye Angling Club, which manages around 5.5 miles of fishing waters on the River Wye.

Markets, Summer Events and Getting Around

Free bandstand concerts take place by the river on Sunday afternoons in summer. Check the current concert dates if you are planning a visit. For a different way to see the town, the Vintage & Design Shopping Trail includes sixteen specialist independent shops. The “Museum Without Walls” smartphone app also offers an augmented-reality walking tour in Ross-On-Wye.

The Daffodil Line is a community-run bus service connecting Ross-On-Wye with Newent and Ledbury. If you plan to include these places in your itinerary, check the current timetable before travelling.
