Hop harvesting once shaped Bishops Frome; its church, local history and riverside paths offer different ways to spend your time here. Church of St Mary and the “Year of the Hop” Museum explore different aspects of the past. For walking, there is a circular route with stops in the village and the Herefordshire Trail to steep Fromes Hill. Frome Valley Vineyard adds seasonal tours and tastings to the mix. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between the routes and taking the vineyard’s season and advance booking requirements into account.

Church of St Mary and the history of hop harvesting

Only the chancel arch and south doorway remain from the original Church of St Mary, which dates to the late 12th century. The lower parts of the tower date from around 1300. These dates therefore refer to different parts of the church building, rather than a single construction date. If you are interested in its architectural history, you can focus on these specifically identified features.

Hop harvesting is also part of the village’s history: Bishops Frome once played an important role in it. At the beginning of the last century, the population rose from 700 to 5,000 during the harvest. These figures give a sense of the harvest’s seasonal significance. Two different historical perspectives come together here: the surviving parts of the church and the temporary changes to village life during the harvest.

Circular route or Herefordshire Trail?

A circular route starts at The Hop Pocket Shopping Village and follows a riverside footpath to the church in Bishops Frome and the village play area. Its description thus links a specific starting point with two named destinations. Route conditions and local access may change; check both before setting out. The Herefordshire Trail follows a different route: from Bishop's Frome, it crosses the River Frome and leads to steep Fromes Hill. You can choose between them based on these differences: the circular route lists the church and play area as stops, while the trail takes you across the river to Fromes Hill.

Tours and tastings at Frome Valley Vineyard

Frome Valley Vineyard is situated in a bend of the River Frome. It is open for tours and tastings from April to September; visits are by booking through the website or by arranging an appointment by phone. If you plan to visit the vineyard, take this seasonal opening period into account and arrange your visit in advance. Check the information again before you travel. This way, you can make it a distinct part of your stay.

Museum and practical village information

The “Year of the Hop” Museum, presented by the Bromyard and District Historical Society, is located in The Hop Pocket Shopping Village. Exhibitions and displays may change over time. If the museum is important to your plans, check its current focus in advance. The museum’s name refers to hop harvesting, adding to the story of its former importance to the village. Bishops Frome also has a community shop. If you plan to use it as a local resource, check on site whether you can rely on it.
