When planning a stay in Fivehead, you can choose nature watching and architectural history as two distinct focuses. On the nature side, there are the arable flora of Fivehead Arable Fields and the woodland and birdlife of Swell Wood. The churches offer specific points of interest in their Grade I status, historic fabric and a dated inscription. For planning, the seasonal nature information, route length and opening hours of St Martin’s are particularly useful.

Arable flora and woodland through the seasons

Fivehead Arable Fields is managed as cultivated farmland to preserve rare arable plants. In summer, it offers a unique display of arable flowers. It is also the only known site of narrow-fruited corn salad in southwest England. Management is part of its conservation purpose; at the same time, the abundance of summer flowers makes this season a specific focus for nature lovers.

Swell Wood offers a different focus. The woodland is a mix of ancient woodland and an abandoned oak plantation that is more than 100 years old. More than 100 pairs of grey herons breed in the trees between March and June. The two sites therefore highlight different aspects of nature: at Fivehead Arable Fields, cultivated land and its summer flowers; at Swell Wood, woodland structure and a clearly specified breeding season.

Walking routes and directions

The Stillbrook & Fivehead circular walk is 5.8 km long. This distance gives you a concrete measure for fitting the route into your stay. The Parish of Fivehead also has circular walking routes that bring nature, landscape variety and the history of the local area to life. Route conditions can change seasonally; check them before setting out.

Swell Wood can be reached via the A378 Langport road between Fivehead and Curry Rivel. Check conditions before travelling. This gives you a specific road reference for this nature stop, as well as a reason to check your travel plans in advance.

Churches with traces from different periods

The Church of St Martin is a Grade I listed Anglican parish church in the village of Fivehead. Its daily opening hours are listed as 9:30 am to 4:00 pm; in summer, the church is usually open for longer. Check current opening hours and access arrangements before visiting.

The Church of St Catherine at Swell is also a Grade I listed Anglican church. Its fabric dates from the 12th, 15th and 16th centuries. These three dates make it a specific point of interest in the architectural history of Swell and distinguish it from the parish church of St Martin in the village of Fivehead.

Fivehead Baptist Chapel also has its own architectural detail: a central date inscription reads “1860 Enlarged 1869 Baptist Chapel”. The exact wording links the years 1860 and 1869 with the Chapel. While the fabric of St Catherine’s is notable for spanning several centuries, the Baptist Chapel’s particular point of interest is this inscription.

You can distinguish the nature destinations by their seasonal highlights and the churches by the architectural details mentioned for each. This lets you tailor your interests to your stay without reducing all the sights to the same theme.
