In Cucklington, village history and paths through the landscape come together: the village is clustered around St Lawrence Church and overlooks the Blackmore Vale. It lies just south of the A303. The church, landscape and public paths in the surrounding area give you several points to consider when deciding whether Cucklington fits your travel plans.

Location and paths around Cucklington

The network of rights of way in and around Cucklington offers opportunities for walking, horse riding and cycling. When planning a route, you can choose between shorter local circuits and longer paths to neighbouring villages. This gives you a local loop or a route with a village outside Cucklington as its destination, to suit different kinds of outings. Motorised vehicles are not allowed on the Restricted Byways; take this restriction into account when choosing your routes.

St Lawrence Church: history and services

St Lawrence Church is the village parish church and is listed Grade II*. The earliest records of the church are found in the Taxatio of 1291. The early written record and the Grade II* listing are two distinct points of reference for the church’s history: one dates back to the Middle Ages, while the other indicates the church’s listed status.

Holy Communion is held at 9am on the first and third Sundays of each month. If you would like to include this service in your travel plans, check the date before you arrive. This will allow you to plan around the specified Sundays and time.

Listed buildings and memorials

At Shanks House, there is a blocked-up doorway with a quatrefoil arch. It is probably the last surviving remnant of a medieval farmhouse. A stone garden sculpture stands 20 metres north of the porch at Shanks House. The garden ornament probably dates from the 18th century and was moved to this house in the 1930s. The two details therefore reflect different periods: a possible medieval origin and an older garden ornament that was later brought to its present location.

Church House is also part of the area around St Lawrence Church. The listed building dates back at least to the 18th century and adds another historic building in the church’s surroundings to the picture.

In the village centre stands the Cucklington War Memorial, a Grade II listed memorial in the form of a Latin cross. It commemorates four men from the parish who died in the First World War. The cross shape and the specific remembrance of these four local people give the memorial both a clearly recognisable form and a local historical connection.
