There are several different themes to choose from for a stay in Duloe: the prehistoric stone circle, church history, St Cuby’s Well, tours and tastings at Cornish Orchards, and a circular walk to Herodsfoot. This lets you consider archaeological heritage, historical details, cider and a hike as separate focal points.
The white quartz stone circle
Duloe Stone Circle is the smallest stone circle in Cornwall and dates from the late Bronze Age. Its stones are made of white quartz. This makes it possible to understand three different aspects of the monument: its size in regional comparison, its historical period and its material. For visitors interested in prehistoric sites, these details offer a concrete way to learn about the circle’s history. Check the current access conditions before your visit, as conditions at the site may change. The combination of regional context and dating helps distinguish the archaeological focus from Duloe’s church and other historical themes.
Church history and tombs
The church in Duloe was originally dedicated to St Cuby; the dedication to St Leonard was added later. The chapel in Duloe contains a tomb with a recumbent effigy of Sir John Coleshull. This is distinct from the group of two late-18th-century chest tombs, which stands 45 m southeast of the Church of St Cuby. The history of the dedication, the tomb in the chapel and the chest tombs are different details of the church’s heritage. A chest tomb is a box-shaped tomb.
St Cuby’s Well and Cornish Orchards
St Cuby’s Well is opposite the entrance to Cornish Orchards on the B3254. The well house probably dates from the 15th century. Its location provides a specific landmark, while the dating of the well house remains a probable estimate.
Cornish Orchards offers tours and tastings every week. The tours explain how cider is made and how different flavours are developed; the experience also includes time in the historic orchard. If you plan to attend a tasting, check the dates for your travel period in advance.
Circular walk to Herodsfoot
A circular walk from Duloe passes through the woods along the West Looe River to Herodsfoot. Trail conditions can vary seasonally; check them before your hike. The walk is quite different from the tours at Cornish Orchards: here, the focus is on hiking and scenery, while the tours explain cider-making and include a tasting. You can therefore choose between a walk through woods along the river and a guided cider experience.
