Ockley can be explored through several layers of history: in a church with features from different centuries, in traces of the Roman road and in the countryside around Ockley Green. There are also walks, wildlife watching and recurring village events. Those considering the village as a travel destination can therefore plan their visit around its cultural history, landscape or an event date.

Church and historic route traces

The Church of St Margaret reveals its building history through several parts: its core dates from the 12th century, the nave from the 14th century and the porch from the 15th century. The bells are considered to be Richard Phelps’s oldest set of bells still hanging, from the Whitechapel Bell Foundry. The church thus brings together different building phases; the bells add another distinct historical feature.

The raised, straight course of the A29 runs across the wet ground of Ockley Green. It is recognised as a section of the raised roadbed, or agger, of the partly preserved Roman road Stane Street. The Stone Street Causeway also crosses Ockley Green. The two names point to different historical associations, which can be distinguished when looking at the village’s history.

A battle in 851 between invading Danes and the West Saxons is thought likely to have taken place at Ockley, on the lower slopes of Leith Hill. There is some evidence that a small Norman castle was built in Ockley during the reign of King Stephen, from 1135 to 1154. Both accounts should be treated with caution: the battle’s location is considered likely, while the castle is supported by some evidence.

Walks, art and wildlife

Vann Lake & Candy’s Copse can be reached on foot at the end of Vann Lake Road, which branches off Weare Street in Ockley. There is no parking on Vann Lake Road. Bear the walking access in mind when planning your visit and check the latest conditions before travelling.

As you walk along the shore of Vann Lake & Candy’s Copse, you pass through wet and dry woodland as well as open water. The changing landscape shapes the route and offers a variety of impressions.

The Hannah Peschar Sculpture Garden’s contemporary art sits alongside birds, insects and other wildlife from Surrey. The garden is not directly accessible by public transport. If you are planning a visit, check the latest travel information before setting out.

Events throughout the year

Ockley’s Bonfire and Fireworks event is usually held each year on the first or second Saturday in November; dates may change. Carols on the Green usually takes place before the Christmas tree lighting in Ockley. The Coarse Cricket Sevens competition is held annually. These events offer different reasons to visit, but if you are planning your trip around an event, check the exact date in advance.

Plan your stay to suit

If an event is the deciding factor, check its date first. If your visit is not tied to an event, weigh up the cultural and nature-related themes as different focuses for your travel plans.
