West Wycombe offers a range of things to discover for a stay focused on cultural heritage. Church Hill is home to an Iron Age fortified settlement; the tower and chancel of St Lawrence Church are the village’s oldest surviving medieval structure. There is also evidence of the 18th century and the West Wycombe Woodland Walk.

Landscape, fortifications and church architecture

The grounds of West Wycombe Park contain numerous classically inspired ornamental temples and water features. On West Wycombe Hill, ramparts and deep ditches are still visible at the old fortification. The main features differ: the park focuses on decorative architecture and water features, while the Hill is notable for the visible remains of a fortification.

An Iron Age fortified settlement is located on Church Hill. The Camp on Church Hill is designated as Scheduled Monument BU80. Together with the medieval church, this creates a contrast in periods between the Iron Age settlement and the village’s oldest surviving medieval structure. Those interested in different historical periods will therefore find more here than the history of a single building.

The Hellfire Caves and other traces of the past

The Hellfire Caves were dug by hand in the 1750s to provide work for unemployed agricultural labourers. They later became a meeting place for Dashwood’s Hellfire Club. Dashwood Mausoleum was built in 1765 from Portland stone and flint. The caves and the mausoleum thus represent different aspects of 18th-century history: the creation of a place for work and later meetings, and a building made from two specified materials.

A craft class can also be part of your plans: Walled Garden Pottery offers pottery classes in West Wycombe. Check the current class schedule before booking. This lets you take a specific interest in a class into account when planning your trip, alongside visits to historic sites, without making every visit the same kind of experience.

Planning walks and travel

The West Wycombe Woodland Walk starts at West Wycombe Car Park on Chorley Road in West Wycombe (HP14 3AP). The route climbs 200 feet at the start. Take this ascent into account from the outset when planning your walk. You can choose between different priorities: historic sites or a named trail with a climb at the beginning.

West Wycombe is served by two bus routes from High Wycombe: route 40 runs to Thame, and route 275 to Oxford. The nearest railway station is Saunderton, three miles away. These details provide practical information when weighing up bus and train options for your journey. Check the timetables before you travel.

Parking at the Hellfire Caves is very limited. A car park with 200 spaces and postcode HP14 3AP is about a five-minute walk away. Factor the approximate walking time into your travel plans and check current parking information before setting off. The Hellfire Caves are not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs; take this restriction into account when planning your visit.

As of 2 September 2026, St Lawrence Church and its tower are closed to visitors; repairs are planned for the tower. Before visiting, check whether the closure is still in effect.
