Little Missenden can be explored through several distinct themes: medieval wall paintings at St John the Baptist, a long festival tradition, and routes for walking or cycling. You can shape your visit around culture, music or outdoor activity—without having to combine these options into a single set itinerary.

St John the Baptist and medieval wall paintings

The parish church of St John the Baptist was founded in 975 and has been a place of pilgrimage for more than 1,000 years. It is a Grade I listed building. The wall paintings inside the church date from the late 12th century. They were first uncovered in 1931; in 2017, the paintings in the nave and throughout the church were conserved and restored. These dates give a visit to the church a clear focus on art and conservation history.

Visitors can learn about the wall paintings through a visitor facility, an introductory film, a digital guide and digital reconstructions. Check which options are currently available before travelling. Tours for large and small groups are available on request. St John the Baptist is also a place for private prayer and visits; check visiting arrangements before your visit.

Cream teas are also part of the church’s seasonal offering: they are served every Sunday from May to September. If you would like to include one in your visit, check before travelling whether they will be served on the Sunday you plan to visit.

The Little Missenden Conservation Area, designated in 1971, also helps put the village in context. The church, wall paintings and designation provide a historical focus; the festival complements it with an emphasis on contemporary music.

A festival focused on contemporary music

The Little Missenden Festival has been held annually without interruption for more than 60 years. Since it was founded, its main focus has been contemporary music, and it has always commissioned new music. This gives it a different cultural focus from the church’s medieval wall paintings: rather than historical art, the emphasis here is on contemporary musical creation. The annual programme varies, so check the event dates if you would like to plan your visit around the festival.

Circular walk, cycle route and the River Misbourne

The “Traditional Chiltern industries” circular walk is 4¾ miles long, passes through Little Missenden and can be started there. As a circular route, it has a specific distance and a named thematic focus. Check current path conditions and access arrangements before setting out.

The route leads to Little Missenden Mill House, also known as Sibley's Mill. Its chimney still stands; the building itself is a private home. This information helps put the route’s connection to the mill in context, without presenting the house as a publicly accessible destination.

For cyclists, section 20 of a cycling guide describes a different route: it goes from Amersham through Little Missenden and along the River Misbourne towards Great Kingshill. At Little Missenden, the River Misbourne is a chalk stream and is described as an internationally rare wildlife habitat. Check current route conditions before setting out. When comparing the two options, note that the walking route is described as a circular walk with a stated distance; for section 20, the places mentioned and the direction are the key details.

Practical information

There is a small car park at the Village Hall. The church is a ten-minute walk from there. As local parking conditions should be checked, find out about the situation on site before travelling. It is also worth keeping the relevant arrangements in mind for the other parts of your visit: tours are available on request, cream teas are seasonal and the festival programme changes each year.
