Bowness-on-Windermere lies on the shore of Lake Windermere. From here, views stretch across the lake to the mountains. Bowness Bay forms the lively heart of the waterfront; Bowness Pier is the main departure point for cruises on Windermere. This puts experiences on the water alongside culture, history and paths through the landscape.

Experience Windermere from the water

For the 2026 operating season, the Islands (Blue) Cruise is listed as a 45-minute round trip from Bowness Bay. Check the timetable for your travel date, as schedules can change. The duration gives you a specific timeframe for this outing, without requiring you to plan an entire day around it.

The Steaming Up Experience offers a different way to enjoy the lake: participants raise steam on the restored 1902 Edwardian steam launch Osprey and then take a round trip on Windermere. Here, learning about the historic vessel is also part of the experience. Those interested in sailing can also find the Royal Windermere Yacht Club's Youth Sailing Club. It is open to members and non-members; participation requirements can change.

Beatrix Potter, art and local history

The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction brings all 23 stories to life in a recreated Lake District landscape and includes Peter Rabbit's Garden. Visitor access for people with pushchairs, as well as step-free access, is via sloping ramps from Crag Brow or Rayrigg Road. Access arrangements can change; check the latest information before your visit. In the centre of Bowness-on-Windermere, on Crag Brow, the Attraction shares a building with The Victoria Wood Theatre.

The theatre offers a year-round programme of drama, classical music, folk, comedy and film. If you would like to combine a visit with a performance, check the dates for your travel period. For art and creative activities, Blackwell – The Arts & Crafts house is another option. This Grade I listed building was designed by architect Mackay Hugh Baillie Scot. It hosts art exhibitions, family-friendly activities, creative workshops and events; for a specific workshop or date, it is worth checking the current programme.

St. Martin's Church also offers a historic point of interest: its present structure dates from 1483. The east window contains medieval stained glass, including a piece believed to date from around 1260. The approximate date of this individual piece should be distinguished from the date of the present church structure.

The collection at Windermere Jetty Museum includes 40 boats and documents the history of sailing on Windermere since the late 18th century. This gives the museum a distinct focus alongside the church's stained glass and Blackwell's architecture: here, the development of sailing on the lake takes centre stage.

Paths between the shore, the heights and Blackwell

The Beatrix Potter Walk starts and finishes at The World of Beatrix Potter in Bowness-on-Windermere. Its route follows the shores of Lake Windermere and crosses the wooded heights of Claife Heights. There is also a 5-mile circular walking route connecting Bowness-on-Windermere with Blackwell. The descriptions offer different points of reference for planning: the Beatrix Potter Walk takes in the shore and the heights, while the circular route links the town with Blackwell. Check the current route description and trail conditions before setting out.
