Roose offers two different ways to explore the area actively: the Roose–Furness Abbey–Dalton walking route and cycling routes with their own starting points. The walking route runs mostly along a flat, traffic-free section and has a hilly middle section; the Coast Road Loop is a 19.5-mile circular route rated as moderate. Other highlights include Furness Abbey as a historic destination and the Tour de Furness charity cycling event. When planning an overnight stay, you can first decide whether you’ll mainly be walking or whether you want to focus on a cycling route or event.

On foot: Abbey Greenway and Furness Abbey

The Roose–Furness Abbey–Dalton walking route runs mostly along a flat, traffic-free section; the middle section is hilly. Take both parts of the route’s profile into account when planning, rather than considering the entire route flat. From Roose railway station, the route follows Flass Lane; before the bridge over the Red River, it turns onto the Abbey Greenway. The Greenway crosses the river via a footbridge. The sequence of station, Flass Lane, Greenway and river crossing provides clear directions for the walk. The walking route also offers an initial view of Furness Abbey.

Furness Abbey dates from the 12th century and was once the second most important Cistercian abbey in England. Its 12th-century origins place the site in historical context; its former standing points to its importance in the history of the English Cistercians. A walking route near Roose also leads to the Vale of Nightshade, a natural amphitheatre. You can therefore choose between a historical highlight and a striking natural landform, depending on your interests.

Cycling routes and starting points

The Coast Road Loop starts and ends at Roose railway station. It is 19.5 miles long, rated as moderate and includes some hills. The distance, rating and terrain provide useful details for fitting the ride into your day’s plans.

The Tour de Furness charity cycling event is scheduled for early September. It offers four different routes, all starting at the Cons Club in Roose. Its format differs from the Coast Road Loop: the loop is a named 19.5-mile circular route, while the event offers a choice of four routes from a shared starting point. If the event will determine your visit, check the specific date before planning your trip.

Bus and accommodation planning
