Thaxted combines a well-preserved historic centre with timber-framed houses and steeply pitched roofs; the church and windmill also shape the town’s appearance. The Guildhall adds another historic stop, with its museum and permanent exhibition. Music, architecture and walking routes give a stay in Thaxted several different points of interest.

Timber-Framed Houses, Church and Guildhall

Thaxted’s historic centre is well preserved. Timber-framed houses and their steeply pitched roofs are among the defining features of the townscape. Parts of the Church of St John the Baptist date from the 14th, 15th and early 16th centuries. Thaxted Guildhall was probably built between 1462 and 1475. Thus, parts of the church dating from several centuries stand alongside the Guildhall, whose construction period is more narrowly defined but also given cautiously.

Thaxted Windmill stands southwest of the church and is a defining feature of the town. The churchyard is also home to two former almshouses, which frame the windmill behind them. The Chantry has a different history of use: it was first built as a priest’s house and later became an almshouse with four dwellings under one roof. Together, these buildings point to different aspects of the area’s architectural and social history.

Thaxted Guildhall houses a small museum with a permanent exhibition of photographs and objects relating to Thaxted’s history. A seasonal schedule lists public opening hours at Easter on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and the Bank Holiday Monday from 2 to 6 pm; for the period afterwards until the end of September, it lists Sundays and public holidays. Check the museum’s opening hours and visitor arrangements before visiting.

Musical History and Seasonal Events

Gustav Holst wrote several works specifically for Thaxted, including “Tomorrow shall be my dancing day.” The address The Steps, 19 Town Street, is also part of his family’s local history: the family moved there in 1917. A blue plaque is beside the front door. The connection to Holst thus links a specific building with Thaxted’s musical history.

In spring, up to 300 colourful Morris dancers can dance through the town alongside musicians and fools. If you would like to plan your stay around this event, check the current dates.

Walking Routes and Visitor Information

Thaxted lies in the gently rolling countryside of northwest Essex. The town has walking routes along many cobbled footpaths. This lets you add a walk to your visit without limiting it to a single historic building.

The Tourist and Community Information Centre offers comprehensive tourist information during its opening hours. It can also arrange guided tours of the town’s notable buildings for groups. Make arrangements for such tours in advance. This way, you can include visits to historic buildings in your plans and, if needed, check beforehand which information or tour would suit your visit.
