A stay in Stansted Mountfitchet offers a range of discoveries, from historic buildings and museum collections to interactive experiences and trails through the town and surrounding countryside. This lets you plan your time around your own interests rather than grouping everything under a single theme. The mill, church and castle offer different historical perspectives, while the museum and Dinosaur Encounter provide other experiences.

The History of the Mill, Church and Castle

Stansted Windmill is a red-brick tower mill. It was built for Joseph Linsell in 1787 and last operated as a mill in 1910. These two dates mark both the building’s origins and the end of its use as a mill.

The Church of St Mary the Virgin was built by William Mountfitchet between 1120 and 1124 and is about a mile from the town. Original Norman architectural features distinguish the church. Inside are a stone effigy of a knight and elaborate monuments to Sir Thomas Middleton and Hester Middleton. The construction date, surviving features and monuments each offer a different perspective on the town’s history.

Stansted Mountfitchet Castle is designated a Scheduled Monument. It is considered the only reconstruction in the world of a wooden motte-and-bailey castle on its original site. The castle complex also houses The Darkside Of Medieval Life, an interactive walk-through experience created in 2020. It covers topics including alchemy, tannery workers, rat catchers and the Black Death, adding a themed experience to the history of the castle complex.

Museums, Toys and Modern History

The House on the Hill Museum displays at least 80,000 toys, books and games dating from the late Victorian era to the 1990s. The collection spans a long period and offers a different way to explore the past than the history of buildings and churches. There is also an exhibition on the First World War, the Blitz and the Battle of Britain in the Second World War.

The museum’s interactive activities include a puppet theatre and Lego and Brio tables. Visitors can also try on helmets and masks from the First and Second World Wars. The collection, historical exhibition and hands-on activities offer different focal points for a museum visit. The House on the Hill Museum is right next to Stansted Mountfitchet railway station.

Dinosaurs and Outdoor Discoveries

At Dinosaur Encounter, life-size dinosaurs stand at the entrance, including an animatronic Velociraptor, Allosaurus and Ankylosaurus. A palaeontology area complements the encounter with the models, where visitors can explore fossils. The experience focuses both on the dinosaurs on display and on exploring fossils.

The 6 km Stansted Mountfitchet Town and Country Trail follows pavements in the town centre and footpaths through fields and woods. It therefore combines routes through the town with sections in open and wooded countryside. Nearby is Aubrey Buxton Nature Reserve, just outside the precise town boundary and directly connected by local walking routes. Its circular trails pass ponds and wind through woods.

Another route option is listed on the Flint and Forge Discovery Map: a 14- or 30-mile route that starts in Stansted Mountfitchet and heads west to the former home of sculptor Henry Moore. These distances are considerably longer than the 6 km trail, so you can distinguish between the options based on the distance you plan to cover. Check the current route directions when planning your trip.
