Halstead’s local history can be seen in its churches, a chantry and an early theatre; alongside these are a walking route by the River Colne, formal gardens and market and event dates. For planning, the distinction is useful: the buildings and their history provide a cultural focus, while the market and events bring specific dates into your travel period. You can therefore tailor your accommodation search to what you most want to experience in Halstead.

Local History in Churches and Buildings

The Halstead Heritage Museum is located behind The Queen’s Hall in Chipping Hill, Halstead. St Andrew’s Church has a peal of eight bells; its organ was installed by Henry Willis and Sons in 1882. A church has stood on the site since the reign of King John. St Andrew’s therefore brings together both a long history of continuous worship and two clearly identifiable musical features. Holy Trinity Church offers a different focus: it is one of the earliest examples of a Gothic Revival church in the Early English style.

Other places also have specific dates associated with them. Whispers at 26 High Street was licensed as a chantry in 1412 under the will of Bartholomew Lord Bourchier and is one of the town’s oldest buildings. The Empire Theatre was Halstead’s first purpose-built theatre and cinema; it opened in May 1915. The dates provide different points of reference for local history: 1412 marks the chantry’s licensing, 1882 the installation of the organ and May 1915 the theatre’s opening.

The River Colne and Landscaped Gardens

A walking route runs along the River Colne in Halstead; Townsford Mill spans the same river. The River Colne is therefore associated both with a walk and with a named building. Halstead Public Gardens have their own distinctive design: they are laid out formally in the Victorian style. If you are choosing between a riverside walk and a garden-themed visit, these places offer different perspectives on Halstead.

Market, Fayres and Theatre Programme

A small market is held in Halstead on Fridays. There are also the Summer and Christmas Fayres. Annual highlights include a Torchlight Procession and Christmas carols. The Empire Theatre is a 300-seat venue; its programme includes films as well as tribute bands, retro acts, country, jazz and pantomime events. The programme may change.

When choosing your travel dates, it makes a difference whether you want to experience the Friday market, a Fayre or a particular event at the Empire Theatre. Check the latest market and event dates and the theatre programme before travelling.
