Saffron Walden brings together a range of cultural themes: garden rooms, museum collections, Norman castle remains, the history of a church and a concert hall. When planning your visit, you can choose a focus based on whether you are more interested in the layout of a garden, different areas of a collection, historic architectural styles or concerts.

Garden Rooms and The Maze

Bridge End Garden is a restored Victorian garden made up of several small, interconnected garden areas. Its five main areas include the Dutch Garden, Summerhouse Lawn, Rose Garden, Maze and Kitchen Garden. The connections between the smaller areas and the five named sections give the grounds a clear internal layout. This places both the garden’s Victorian character and its individual garden rooms at the centre of attention.

Within this layout, The Maze has a distinctive form: concentric circles are cut into the lawn, and a low bank surrounds the grounds. The Maze is designated a Scheduled Ancient Monument and is thought to be of medieval origin. Its geometric form and presumed historical origins offer two different ways to view this part of the garden.

Collections at Saffron Walden Museum

The collections at Saffron Walden Museum cover natural history, Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece, archaeology and local history. They also include ceramics and glass, furniture, woodwork and textiles. The collection profile thus combines natural and cultural history with regional topics and a variety of material groups. This offers a different approach from focusing on a single building: when choosing cultural attractions, you can follow an area of interest, such as archaeology and local history, or the collections of ceramics, furniture and textiles.

Castle Remains and Church Architecture

Walden Castle is listed as a Grade I building and is also a Scheduled Ancient Monument. It consists of the extensive ruins of a Norman keep. At St Mary the Virgin, the architectural history takes a different focus: the church was almost entirely rebuilt between 1450 and 1525. This comparison takes you from Norman castle remains to a clearly defined period of rebuilding; both sites thus represent different types of architectural heritage. A keep is the fortified main tower of a castle.

St Mary the Virgin is open daily year-round, from around 8:30 a.m. until dusk or later. Check opening hours before you travel.

Saffron Hall

Saffron Hall is a concert hall on the grounds of Saffron Walden County High School. It adds another cultural point of interest to the themes of gardens, collections and architectural history. If you are planning to attend a concert, check the dates for your travel period.
