Eleven bells in a 50-foot-high brick tower and a monumental Romanesque basilica show just how varied church architecture is in Carlton. Nearby, a park with a circular path and a leisure centre with two swimming pools offer other ways to spend your time. You can weigh up your cultural interests and opportunities for exercise when planning your itinerary.

Churches with Different Architectural Histories

St Paul’s is considered the first Anglican parish church to be built in the style of a Roman basilica. The building was constructed in two phases between 1885 and 1891 as a monumental Romanesque basilica and was consecrated in 1885. Extensive moulded brickwork and terracotta ornamentation are among its defining details. St Paul’s therefore offers two points of comparison for its architecture: the basilica form and its ornamented finish.

St John the Baptist is a large modern Anglican church, built in 1956. Its brick tower is 50 feet high and carries eleven bells. The church also houses the life-size statue “Mother and Child at the Well” by Josephina de Vasconcellos. Alongside its building history, the church is notable for a specific feature of its tower and a named work of art. The comparison therefore focuses on different details: the basilica form and ornamentation at St Paul’s, and the tower and statue at St John’s.

Main Street Methodist Church and Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church add to the picture. The Methodist church is made of red brick, and its front façade has richly decorated window tracery. Sacred Heart was consecrated in 1931. While the material and façade design are the focus at Main Street, Sacred Heart’s consecration date provides a specific historical reference.

Park, Swimming and Getting There

Burton Road Jubilee Park offers opportunities for walking. A 1.2-metre-wide circular path runs along the edge of the park and leads to all the facilities. Its width and route make it a practical option for spending time outdoors and help set a walk apart as an activity in its own right, alongside visiting the churches.

Carlton Forum Leisure Centre adds another option, with a 25-metre swimming pool and a 12-metre teaching pool. Activities on offer include family and lane swimming sessions. The different pool lengths and swimming sessions provide two points to consider: you can check which pool length and format better suit your plans. As the availability of individual swimming sessions can change, check the current offering before you visit.

Carlton’s transport history also helps put the town’s development into context. Its growth was linked to its location on the outskirts of Nottingham and its proximity to the railway lines. The tram connection from Nottingham city centre to Carlton was completed by 1914. This historic link and the present-day railway station are two different aspects: Carlton railway station is still in operation, even though the original station building no longer exists. Check current rail services when planning your journey.

If you’re looking for a hotel in Carlton, first decide what you want your stay to focus on: church architecture, walks in Burton Road Jubilee Park or swimming at Carlton Forum Leisure Centre.
