Two very different themes stand out for a stay in Sywell: trails in the Country Park and aviation history at the Aerodrome. There is also a historic reservoir, a listed church and a museum on the airfield grounds. These attractions can be considered separately according to your interests, rather than combined into a single itinerary.

Trails and water history

Sywell Country Park has two named trails with different formats. The Waterworks heritage trail is a 1 km red route. The Reservoir trail is a 2.5-mile (4 km) circular walk around the reservoir. The two routes differ by three kilometres; the loop around the water also contrasts with the shorter red route, which focuses on heritage. Their length and circular format are useful points of reference when deciding which trail option best suits your visit.

The park’s fishing lake covers 67 acres (28 hectares). The lake’s origins are also part of the site’s history: it opened in 1906 as a water-supply reservoir for Rushden and Higham Ferrers. The park thus brings together present-day trails and the reservoir’s clearly defined former purpose, offering different ways to engage with nature and history.

Sywell Country Park has four play areas.

Airfield history and museum

Sywell Aerodrome has been in existence since 1928. During the Second World War, it served as an important RAF flying training station and was also a major centre for repairing almost 2,000 Wellington bombers. These two roles show different aspects of its wartime history: training and maintenance were equally part of its historical role.

Paul Morgan Hall is dedicated to the history of Sywell Aerodrome. An original “Link” trainer is on display there. Sywell Aviation Museum is a volunteer-run, non-profit organisation. Its aims include preserving the history of the airfield and Northamptonshire’s rich aviation heritage—from the beginnings of aviation and beyond the Second World War. The exhibition and the museum’s stated aim therefore offer a different focus from the Country Park’s trails and its former role in water supply.

The museum is located on the grounds of Sywell Aerodrome. Access may occasionally be affected by events at the airfield. A museum tour also includes a visit to the hangars to see real aircraft. The museum currently advertises group and school tours; arrangements may change. If you are planning a tour, check the visitor arrangements in advance.

On selected days throughout the year, open-cockpit Tiger Moth flights are offered as experience flights at Sywell Aerodrome. Flight days and providers may change, so it is worth checking the latest dates before making plans. Trial flights in fixed-wing aircraft and full pilot training are also available. Providers and offerings may change here too. The options range from a single experience flight to comprehensive training; which one is right for you depends on what you are looking for during your stay.

Church and visitor highlights

The Church of St. Peter and Paul in Sywell is designated a Grade II* Listed Building. It is open to visitors on Saturdays and Sundays. As visitor information may change, check opening arrangements again before your visit. The church adds its own heritage focus to the history of aviation and water.

Different points of comparison can help you find your way around Sywell: in the Country Park, trail lengths and circular routes are clearly specified; at the Aerodrome, the focus is on airfield history, the museum and changing flight offerings; and the church provides a separate reason to visit at the weekend. If you want to include several themes in your stay, it is best to decide first which of these interests matters most to you. For plans with fixed dates, the main things to check are current flight days, tour arrangements and the church’s visitor information.
