East Haddon brings together architectural history, garden design and outdoor activities as distinct highlights. The Church of St Mary and East Haddon Hall offer tangible connections to cultural history; the East Haddon Circular walking route starts in the village. The gardens also have different themes: alongside fragments of the gardens at East Haddon Hall are the Haddonstone Show Gardens, which feature a selection of products.

Church and Historic Houses

The Church of St Mary dates from the 12th to 14th centuries and was restored in the 19th century. Specific details of its fittings include a 13th-century font with a decorative frieze. The church’s broad dating and the font’s more precise date offer two different points of reference for its architectural history. This draws attention not only to when the building was constructed, but also to a clearly identified element of its fittings.

East Haddon Hall is a country house dating from around 1780–1781, built for the Sawbridge family. The Thatched House offers an earlier point of reference: the house dates from the mid-17th century and has a thatched roof. Together with the Church of St Mary, the three buildings span a period from the medieval church to houses of the 17th and late 18th centuries.

Gardens and Design

The gardens at East Haddon Hall were laid out by Gertrude Jekyll and Lutyens in 1897; only fragments remain. The Haddonstone Show Gardens have a different focus: they showcase a wide selection of products for the home, garden, landscaping and architecture. Visits to these show gardens are by appointment only. The two garden attractions therefore differ both in their history and in their focus.

Walking and Outdoor Activities

The East Haddon Circular walking route starts in East Haddon and runs mostly across open farmland, offering views along the way. The route provides a distinct way to spend time outdoors alongside the historic buildings and leisure facilities. Trail conditions can vary, so it is worth checking current conditions before setting out.

The East Haddon War Memorial Playing Fields cover 4.9 acres and are used for sport and recreation. Archery lessons are also offered there. This is a specific sporting option among the playing fields’ facilities; by contrast, the circular walking route focuses on open countryside and views.

There are two ways to use the East Haddon Tennis Court: an annual membership or pay-as-you-play. If you plan to play tennis during your stay, you can weigh up these options according to your plans. Alongside archery lessons and the circular walking route, there are other outdoor activities to choose from, each arranged differently.
