South Witham combines a distinctive archaeological feature with church architecture, nature and local walking opportunities. The preceptory, St John the Baptist Church and South Witham Verges nature reserve each offer a different historical and landscape perspective. The Hiking Club adds walking opportunities to the village.

Preceptory and St John the Baptist Church

South Witham Preceptory is the only monument of its kind in England to have been extensively excavated. This excavation status makes it a notable archaeological landmark. St John the Baptist Church offers a different historical perspective: its fabric dates from the late 12th to the 16th century, and it was restored in 1902. The building dates span a long period, while 1902 marks a specific restoration date. Archaeological distinction and architectural history therefore stand side by side as different ways of exploring the past.

The church also contains a stone coffin lid from the mid-14th century. It features a cross motif and the carved head of a man beneath a trefoil arch. This individual work can be dated more precisely than the building fabric as a whole, and draws attention to a particular motif within the long history of the building.

Outside service times, you need to make contact in advance so the church can be unlocked for a visit. Check beforehand whether it is currently possible to arrange for it to be unlocked.

Nature at South Witham Verges

Twenty-eight butterfly species have been recorded at South Witham Verges nature reserve; it also has a rich limestone flora. The flora may vary depending on the season. Access to the site is limited: there are no mown paths, and open ditches are present in places. The access route to the nature reserve runs along a road with fast-moving traffic, so take particular care there. When planning a nature visit, both the seasonal flora and the specific path conditions should therefore be taken into account.

Walks and getting around

The Hiking Club is based in South Witham and aims to offer walks for the local community. Options include walks in the surrounding area as well as longer outings held on alternate Sundays. Local walks and longer outings therefore offer different time commitments to choose from. Anyone wishing to join a walk should book a place on the website. Check the club’s current booking arrangements in advance.

Nature and walking opportunities offer different points of reference for planning your time: the limestone flora can vary seasonally, while the Hiking Club’s longer outings take place on alternate Sundays.

The A1 provides access from South Witham to the motorway network to the north and south. The River Witham also rises in South Witham. This gives visitors both a transport reference for route planning and a named local landscape feature.
