Grantham offers several reasons to stay: medieval architecture and collection history, markets with regular monthly schedules, and paths along the Grantham Canal. When planning, it is worth considering your interests and dates together: the library has seasonal opening hours, and the markets take place on specific Saturdays.
Church, Collection and Architectural History
St Wulfram’s is one of the country’s largest medieval churches and can accommodate around 700 people. Visitors can see the Chained Library and go down to the Crypt Chapel. A visit therefore brings together the church itself and two special rooms and collection spaces.
The Francis Trigge Chained Library was established in 1598 and comprises 356 individual items. It is open to visitors from April to the end of September on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10:00 to 12:00. This seasonal period and the two fixed mornings are important when planning; check the schedule before your visit.
Another example of medieval architectural history is the Angel and Royal Hotel, one of the few surviving medieval inns in England. The two-storey stone building dates from the late 14th century.
Town History, Culture and Walks
The Grantham Museum shares stories from Grantham and the surrounding area through physical and digital exhibitions and experiences. Exhibition content may change. A Town Trail through Grantham is also available; guided walks offer insights into the past and local history.
The Guildhall Arts Centre complements these historical themes with theatre, cinema, comedy and dance, as well as workshops and community activities. This means that visitors can choose from both historical discoveries and a changing programme of performing arts and community events.
Parks and Markets
Facilities mentioned at Wyndham Park include family-friendly play areas, an outdoor gym, a sensory garden, an outdoor splash pool and a visitor centre. The Witham/Slea Blue Green Corridor project also runs through the park along the River Witham; it improves wetland habitats. The park thus offers both visitor facilities and a project to enhance these habitats.
The Dysart Park Family Fun Day and Dog Show are held each year in July. If you would like to plan your trip around either event, check the dates before you travel.
The two Grantham markets have different focuses and monthly schedules. Grantham Craft Market takes place on the first Saturday of each month and offers handmade gifts and household goods from local residents. Grantham Farmers’ Market is held on the second Saturday, with fresh meat, cheese and drinks from local farms. Dates may change, and the traders’ offerings may also vary.
Getting Around the Grantham Canal
The Grantham Canal is about a mile from Grantham railway station. Two different options are useful for cyclists: National Route 15 runs along the canal between Grantham and Muston and is open and fully traffic-free on this section. Another option is a 23.5-mile circular cycling route that starts at the station, follows the canal towpath and returns to the station. Route conditions may change; check them before setting out.
If you are considering Grantham as a place to stay overnight, you can plan your travel dates around the experiences you want: the library’s seasonal opening, one of the monthly market Saturdays, or a focus on culture, parks and cycling. These dates and activities offer different starting points for planning, without prescribing a fixed itinerary.
