At the northern end of the Five Pits Trail lies Grassmoor Country Park. This means two different walking options are described for Grassmoor: the trail leads to Tibshelf Ponds, while a separate footpath runs around the park. The trail also follows a former railway line, and the area has a history of buildings and created wetland areas. When searching for a holiday apartment, these themes can help you shape your stay around the focus you want.
Trails of different lengths
The Five Pits Trail is 5.5 miles long, surfaced and traffic-free. It runs from Grassmoor Country Park to Tibshelf Ponds. The route is suitable for walkers, people with pushchairs, cyclists and horse riders. It is therefore not limited to just one way of getting around. When planning, you can compare the stated length with the activity you have in mind; the route also has a clearly named destination at Tibshelf Ponds.
A shorter alternative is a completed 2.5-kilometre footpath around Grassmoor Country Park. Its final section was completed and officially opened in September 2024. The two routes therefore differ considerably in length and course: the footpath runs around the park, while the Five Pits Trail leads to Tibshelf Ponds. This comparison makes choosing a route a practical planning question, rather than treating both routes as interchangeable walks.
Railway line and local history
The Five Pits Trail follows the route of the Great Central Railway for most of its length. Those interested in industrial history can also consider the route from this perspective: the line’s former use is part of the trail’s history, alongside its length, surfaced path and intended user groups.
The area’s building history also offers specific points of interest. The Church of St Paul was built by T.C. Hine in 1850. Sluggard's Row consisted of five blocks, each with eight cottages—40 in total, arranged in five groups. The two details have different focuses: for the church, the year it was built and the name of its builder; for Sluggard's Row, the arrangement and number of cottages.
Wetland habitats in Grassmoor Country Park
As part of a natural flood management scheme, shallow basins, earth embankments and ponds were created in Grassmoor Country Park. The earthworks were completed in November 2022. Some of the newly created areas form more permanent wetland habitats. Alongside its trails, Grassmoor Country Park has purpose-built water and wetland areas. The wetland habitats are a separate feature, not simply another name for the trails.
Fishing and practice at the golf course
There are 24 fishing pegs at Grassmoor fishing pond. Availability can change; if you are making specific plans, check which pegs are currently available.
Practice at South Chesterfield Golf Club is subject to a clear restriction: members and visitors may use only the driving range or the practice putting green. If golf is to be part of your stay, this is the key guidance on which areas are designated for practice.
