Rudolstadt offers a range of highlights for a trip of discovery: the former residential palace of Heidecksburg, theatrical history, a festival in the town and trails with varying levels of difficulty. So, when planning your trip, it is helpful to first consider whether you would like to focus primarily on cultural history, an events programme or outdoor activities.
Palace history and remarkable buildings
Heidecksburg is the former residential palace of the Counts and Princes of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt and is one of the most magnificent Baroque palaces of the 18th century. It features exhibits and collections on art, cultural and natural history, and invites visitors to explore the Heidecksburg Cabinet of Curiosities. Alongside the palace’s history, its diverse collections are also a central focus.
St. Andrew’s Church offers a glimpse into a different architectural period. The three-aisled Late Gothic hall church was built between 1463 and 1475 by converting a place of worship that had already existed since the 12th century. The Thuringian Farmhouses are also part of Rudolstadt’s historic character: they are considered Germany’s oldest open-air museum. On a guided tour with the Buckelapotheker, you will meet a character from the former Principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. Another guided tour explores the farmhouse kitchens and herb garden, with a focus on old food and ornamental plants, herbs associated with health, and the revival of long-forgotten recipes.
Theatrical history and festival programme
The Rudolstadt Theatre was initially built as a summer theatre on the Anger in 1792/93 at the behest of the princely court. Goethe directed the company, which performed from Weimar, as its artistic director from 1794 to 1805. To this day, the summer theatre at Heidecksburg Castle is an annual highlight of the theatre programme.
The Rudolstadt Festival lasts four days in July. Artists from around 40 countries perform on almost 30 stages throughout the town. The programme includes dance and singing workshops, artist talks and a symposium; there is also an imaginative children’s festival. The details of the programme vary from year to year. If you are planning your trip around the festival, check the dates and programme for that year in advance.
Trails for different abilities
The Hain Discovery Trail starts at Heidecksburg Castle. It is freely accessible at all times and can be visited year-round. Please take local conditions into account. The Schiller Hiking Trail offers a different experience: it is a signposted circular route that can be started at any point along the way. The natural woodland trails cross hilly terrain with around two climbs of 50 metres each; sure-footedness is required.
This distinction is useful when choosing a route: for the Discovery Trail, the starting point at the castle and year-round free access are important considerations. On the Schiller Hiking Trail, you can choose where to join the route, but should take the hilly terrain and the need for sure-footedness into account.
