A Baroque church, a manor house built in 1760 and the vertically upright “Katzhütter Schichten” give Katzhütte a distinctive character. The town also has a local history room, trails on the Wurzelberg and the Schwarzatalbahn railway, which runs from Rottenbach to Katzhütte. The local sights thus bring together cultural and industrial history, geological features and opportunities for hiking.
Churches, Manor House and Local History Room
The Baroque church in Katzhütte is one of the town’s sights. The mountain church in Oelze is also a local cultural destination; it has a Sauer organ. The manor house in Katzhütte was built in 1760 by Wolfgang Hamann as the seat of the princely smelting works inspectorate. The church and manor house offer different perspectives on the town’s history: a religious building on the one hand, and a building originally used for administrative purposes on the other.
One room in the Katzhütte local history room is dedicated to the Hertwig/Zierkeramik Katzhütte company. In the courtyard stands a hammer from the ironworks, preserved as an industrial monument. There is also a miniature replica of the hunting salon of the House of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt on the Wurzelberg. A wet washing drum made at the ironworks for Zierkeramik Katzhütte was reinstalled in the courtyard in 2012. The objects highlight different aspects of the area: they recall the ironworks, decorative ceramics and the hunting salon on the Wurzelberg. The local history room can be toured by prior telephone appointment. Call ahead to arrange a visit and check whether an appointment is currently available.
Geology and Hiking Trails
The “Katzhütter Schichten” emerge in Katzhütte as immense, vertically upright slabs. They are classified as Precambrian and are about 660 million years old. Their precise age cannot currently be determined because these strata contain no fossils. This rock formation is a distinctive attraction alongside the town’s buildings and exhibits: here, the focus is on the geological character of the landscape.
There are two different starting points for hikes. The certified “Schwarzatal” panoramic circular hiking trail passes through Katzhütte and is 135 kilometres long in total. On the Wurzelberg, well-marked hiking trails lead to the Altfrauenteich pond. While the Schwarzatal trail is described as a long, certified circular route, the trail on the Wurzelberg leads to a specific destination. Check the conditions on the relevant route before setting out.
Getting There and Seasonal Activities
The Schwarzatalbahn railway runs from Rottenbach to Katzhütte. VT 641 railcars operate between these towns. If you are considering the train for your journey or when planning an excursion, check the current timetable with the operator. The route information describes the line but does not replace checking the specific departure times.
Another seasonal activity is gold panning, which may take place at a designated site from June to September. A gold nugget weighing 9.64 grams was found there in 2004. It is important to distinguish between the two: the find is a historical event, while gold panning is mentioned as a seasonal activity. So before visiting, check locally whether it is currently taking place.
