Two local highlights in Ruttersdorf-Lotschen are the church, with its history of construction and furnishings, and the hike to the Zipfelteiche. The wider Saale-Holzland destination also offers distinctive cultural and landscape themes.
Ruttersdorf Church: A History of Construction in Stages
Ruttersdorf Church was built in 1636 during the Thirty Years’ War on the site of an earlier church. That same year, the freestanding pulpit altar was installed in the chancel. Christ and the four Evangelists are depicted on the five sides of the pulpit. The church and altar therefore belong to the same period of construction; the iconography is a distinctive detail of the furnishings.
The sacristy was added on the east side in 1768. The date of this alteration is recorded on the weather vane. The sounding board bears the words “Faith, Love, Hope.” This adds a later extension and a striking inscription to the building’s history.
The nave has a gallery on three sides, with two tiers along the long sides. The organ stands in the west gallery and was built in 1873 by the Poppe brothers from Roda. Three different dates are therefore central to understanding the timeline: 1636 for the church and pulpit altar, 1768 for the sacristy extension, and 1873 for the organ. The gallery, meanwhile, gives the nave its distinctive layout.
Hiking and Landscape in the Surrounding Region
A 5 km hike runs along the Zipfelteiche near Ruttersdorf. The distance gives a clear indication of the route’s length, while its course beside the ponds marks its local character. Alongside the church’s history, outdoor activity is another distinct highlight.
The Ruttersdorf-Lotschen portion of the “Zeitzgrund – Teufelstal – Hermsdorfer Moore” Special Area of Conservation covers 28.392 ha. In the wider region, this protected area is a valley system deeply cut into the Saale Sandstone Plateau. Its landscape includes natural streams with riverside trees, ponds, and small remnants of deciduous forest within pine and spruce plantations. The area figure refers to the portion in Ruttersdorf-Lotschen; the landscape description applies to the wider protected area.
