Ilfeld combines scenic attractions with local history. The Bere Valley is a nature reserve with numerous rock formations and wooded areas, extending as far as Netzkater. Ilfeld is located in the Harz UNESCO Global Geopark. Viewpoints, hiking destinations and the local history museum offer different highlights. When planning your visit, you can decide whether to focus on the trails and scenery or on the town’s historical development.

Bere Valley and Viewpoints

Nearby, the Bielsteine and the site of the Ilfeld weather vane offer views of Ilfeld, Niedersachswerfen and the Kohnstein (Landmark 7). Both viewpoints share these three sights. Poppenberg Tower stands at the highest point of the ridge and offers a different perspective: the steel lattice structure was built in 1897 and restored in 1994. The summit of Poppenberg is about 4 km from Ilfeld on foot. These differences can help you choose: the viewpoints focus on the sights mentioned, while Poppenberg also offers the tower itself and the walk to it.

Hiking Destinations and Outdoor Pool

In fine weather, you can hike to the rock formations Mönch, Nadelöhr and Gänseschnabel. From the starting point at Schanzenbrücke, a hiking and cycling trail runs alongside the narrow-gauge railway directly to Ilfeld outdoor pool. While the recommendations for the rock formations are dependent on fine weather, conditions on local trails can change; check them before setting out. The water in the outdoor pool is heated using a solar system. If you plan to visit the pool, check the current visiting arrangements in advance.

Local History Museum and Town History

The Ilfeld Local History Museum traces the development of the town, from the “Eternal Lamp” and the monastery through Neander’s famous Ilfeld Monastery School to the end of the NAPOLA in 1943. The historic museum building was constructed in 1712 for men and their wives who had left the service of the foundation. Within the broader destination of Harztor, dedicated exhibition areas at the Ilfeld Local History Museum include exhibits on industry and crafts, as well as on schools. The exhibition also includes a small model of the Harz Narrow Gauge Railway; the museum gallery features an exhibition on the geology and mineralogy of the local area. If you plan to visit the museum, it is best to check the current visiting arrangements in advance.

Getting to Ilfeld

Ilfeld can be reached via the B4 and B81 federal highways and by the Harz Narrow Gauge Railway. Check the railway’s current timetable before travelling. The “Talbrauerei” stop on bus route 23 is a few minutes’ walk from Ilfeld outdoor pool. Routes and stop details may change; check the information before your journey. For planning a visit to the pool, you can use two reference points: the route from Schanzenbrücke and the Talbrauerei stop, which is a few minutes’ walk away.
