A Baroque park, manor houses and a church built in several phases give Wolkramshausen a strong cultural and historical character. The Southern Harz Apple Day, with its apple variety exhibition and apple pressing for children and families, adds to the appeal. If you are looking for a hotel in Wolkramshausen, you can plan your trip around these interests: park design, architectural history and a recurring event each offer a different focus.

Southern Harz Apple Day at Hue de Grais Palace Park

The Southern Harz Apple Day is held annually in Wolkramshausen, at the foot of the Hainleite hills; the event takes place in Hue de Grais Palace Park. The 2026 event was scheduled for September 27. At that event, visitors could bring their own apples to be identified by an experienced pomologist. Representatives of the Southern Harz Orchard Association presented an exhibition of apple varieties and offered apple pressing for children and families. Having your own fruit identified offers a personal way to take part, while the exhibition and pressing showcase different varieties and how they are processed. If you are planning to attend a future event, check that year’s date and programme: activities may vary.

Baroque Park Design and Manor House History

The Baroque park at Hue de Grais Manor is defined by geometric patterns, covered walkways, fountains and an orchard. The Baroque style is expressed here through the design: geometry and covered walkways structure the grounds, while the fountains and orchard add further distinctive features. This is about more than identifying the period; it also highlights the elements that give the park its character.

From the 18th century onwards, aristocratic landowning and civil-service families settled in Wolkramshausen and built imposing manor houses. In the 19th century, this development earned the town the nickname “Little Paris.” This timeline links the settlement and building activity that began in the 18th century with the name that came later.

One specific building with its own recorded date is the “Neuwilckesches Gut.” Around 1721/22, Walrad Ludwig von Wilcke (1687–1747) and his wife, Anna Wilhelmine, née von Wurmb, built the estate to its present dimensions. St. Trinitatis shows that the town’s history cannot be reduced to a single construction date: Wolkramshausen’s stone church dates from several building periods, and its tower is Romanesque in its core.

Culture in Bleicherode

Bleicherode’s cultural and historical highlights include the Church of Beatae Mariae Virginis and the Old Chancellery. In a wall niche above the entrance to the church sacristy is the statue “Jacob Wrestling with the Angel,” created around 1710. It depicts a scene from Genesis 32:25–27. The church organ has a history of its own: organ builder Robert Knauf created the instrument in the west end of the church. An extensive restoration brought it back to its original 1898 condition in 2013.

The Old Chancellery in Bleicherode comprises a large half-timbered barn with living quarters and a carriage house. Together, they border the courtyard on its west and north sides. The Old Chancellery houses the town library, a music school and an exhibition on the history of Bleicherode’s Jewish community. If you would like to visit any of these facilities, check access arrangements in advance.
