Stadtilm lies in the Ilm Valley, on the eastern foothills of the Thuringian Forest. Its cultural and local history can be seen in the approximately 10,170 m² market square, considered the largest market square in Thuringia, and in the Late Romanesque murals in St. Mary’s Town Church. On Buchberg, a nature trail about one kilometer long passes information boards and activity features. When choosing a hotel in Stadtilm, you can decide whether squares and architectural history or outdoor activities should be the focus of your stay.

Market Square and Town Church

Stadtilm’s market square is approximately 10,170 m² and is considered the largest market square in Thuringia. The square is home to the Methfessel Monument, an obelisk dedicated to composer Albert Methfessel, who was born in Stadtilm. The Eckoldt Fountain, which was reinstalled in 2008, is in the southern half of the square. There is also an e-bike charging station on the market square. If charging is important to your tour planning, check local availability in advance.

St. Mary’s Town Church is a cultural highlight. Its tower vault contains remnants of Late Romanesque murals, which are classified as a monument of national significance. Together with the monument and fountain on the market square, they offer different facets of Stadtilm’s cultural heritage: a dedication to a composer, a reinstalled fountain, and medieval remnants of paintings in the church.

Nature Trail and Outdoor Pool

The nature trail on Buchberg is about 1 km long. It passes information boards about native animal species and trees, as well as activity features such as a climbing net, a long-jump pit and a sound game. At approximately this length, the trail is a short option that combines nature-related topics with activities.

Stadtilm outdoor pool has a snack bar, a children’s playground and sunbathing areas. These facilities offer a different experience from Buchberg, where information boards and activity features line a trail. As details about the outdoor pool may change, check locally for the latest information before visiting.

Cycling and Hiking Ideas in the Ilm District

The Ilm District has regional cycle routes that offer further ways to explore the landscape by bike. The Ilmtal Cycle Route is 123 kilometers long in total; 45 kilometers run through the Ilm District, and the route is certified with four stars. The Ilm-Rennsteig Cycle Route follows a former railway line from Ilmenau to Großbreitenbach or Neustadt am Rennsteig. It connects the Ilmtal Cycle Route with the Rennsteig Cycle Route, is almost entirely paved and is signposted as a bicycle street. The routes described here and the connection between the two cycle routes offer a different scale from the short nature trail on Buchberg.

There are also themed walking routes in the Ilm District. The Kleinbreitenbach Art Trail is two kilometers long. Artworks adorn the Romanesque fortified church, the cemetery, the church forecourt, the village and the path at the edge of the village. Compared with the nature trail on Buchberg, the two trails differ in both length and theme: the nature trail focuses on native animal species and trees, while the art trail features artworks at various places in the village and along the route.
