The Thuringian Herb Garden Nature Park Trail runs through Friedersdorf. The route passes the wildlife enclosure and descends to Waldgut Ölschröte. At the entrance to the village, you can observe wild animals in an enclosure. This combines the specific route with wildlife watching and a place with its own history.

Trail and Rest Stop in Friedersdorf

The Nature Park Trail passes the wildlife enclosure and descends to Waldgut Ölschröte. There is also a covered seating area at the entrance to the village, where hikers can take a break and have a picnic. Wildlife watching and taking a break are different ways to explore Friedersdorf: at the enclosure, the focus is on observing the wild animals; at the seating area, it is on taking a break or having a picnic. The entrance to the village therefore provides a specific point of reference for planning a hiking break, alongside the route itself.

Local History and Festive Occasions

Friedersdorf was first mentioned in a document in 1370. Because of its many weavers, the village acquired the nickname “Little Nuremberg.” The historic Erfurt–Nuremberg trade route also ran through Friedersdorf. Weaving and the route offer two different perspectives on the village’s history. Waldgut Ölschröte served as an inn and children’s holiday camp for many years; these former uses are also part of the village’s history.

International Women’s Day and Halloween are also celebrated in Friedersdorf. These occasions add local festive traditions to the village’s history. If you would like to plan your visit around one of these celebrations, check the specific date in advance.

GroĂźbreitenbach: Landscape and Architectural History

GroĂźbreitenbach is a state-recognized health resort, located around 50 kilometers south of Erfurt and about 15 kilometers southeast of Ilmenau. The town stretches across a plateau between the Langer Berg, the Schwarza Valley, and the Rennsteig long-distance hiking trail. The approximate distances provide a guide to Erfurt and Ilmenau; the other details describe the landscape around GroĂźbreitenbach.

St. Trinity Church in Großbreitenbach has 600 seats and is the largest half-timbered church in Thuringia. The dilapidated St. John’s Church was built in 1570. From 1679, St. Trinity Church was built as its replacement; the old St. John’s Church collapsed in 1771, with only its church tower remaining. Construction of the new church had therefore begun before the predecessor building collapsed. St. Trinity Church was built to the plans of Andreas Rudolphi, the state master builder of Saxe-Gotha, and was consecrated in 1690.

The church is entirely clad in slate. A striking hexagonal roof turret sits atop the steep roof of the broad nave. A roof turret is a tower structure on a roof; here, it complements the description of the distinctive roofline. The wooden baptismal stand dates from 1677 and was transferred from the old St. John’s Church. As a furnishing, it connects the two churches across the construction of the new one: the history of St. Trinity Church thus also includes an older object from its predecessor building.
