A technical monument and trails with varied landscapes give Frankenhain clear points of interest for a stay. The Floßgraben in the town is a very popular hiking trail. Nearby, there are also trails along streams and forest edges, as well as cultural and historical destinations. You can choose your excursions based on the landscape, history, or sporting theme.
Hiking and trails nearby
The Floßgraben in Frankenhain combines two features: it is a technical monument and a very popular hiking trail. Another technical floßgraben is located nearby. The Lütsche Floßgraben is also a popular, well-used hiking trail and a technical monument; the trail passes through a tunnel 38 meters long. This makes for a clear comparison: the Lütsche Floßgraben route includes a tunnel section, while the Floßgraben in Frankenhain is notable above all for its combination of monument and hiking trail.
The Sandbach Valley near Frankenhain is also described as a popular route for long walks. The trail runs along the edge of the forest, right beside the Sandbach; the Sandbach Valley flows into the Lütsche Valley. If you would rather enjoy views and open countryside than follow a stream, the Thuringian Forest Edge Route is nearby. It runs along the forest edge and offers views of the grazed mountain meadows of the Rumpel, the cemetery chapel in Frankenhain, the Reinsberge near Plaue, and the area toward Elgersburg. Coming from Crawinkel, the cycle path continues toward Frankenhain.
The trails described offer different highlights: the floßgraben canals represent technical history, the trail along the Sandbach follows the watercourse, and the Forest Edge Route is associated with several viewpoints. You can choose according to whether you would prefer to focus on a trail beside a stream, a tunnel section, or scenic views.
Local history and culture
The Frankenhain local history museum evokes the atmosphere of a bygone era. Another historic destination is the war memorial on the Kirchberg dry grassland biotope in Frankenhain. The Baroque Church of St. Leonhard was built between 1719 and 1722. It is dedicated to Saint Leonhard, the Franconian patron saint; its interior is splendidly and richly furnished. The church’s construction period, dedication, and interior furnishings give it a distinctive cultural and historical significance.
The Historic Sawmill is located near Frankenhain and was restored in 2006/07. During museum demonstrations, visitors are shown how a sawmill powered by transmission drives cuts logs into boards and beams. This provides a craft and technology theme alongside the religious and local memorial sites. As no dates are given, it is advisable to check the event schedule before visiting.
Sports and practical information
Frankenhain’s sporting facilities include a biathlon stadium and a 1.5-kilometer paved roller-ski track. Both are used for training and competitions. These facilities complement the hiking and cultural attractions with competitive sport, but this does not imply that visitors can participate or use them for recreation.
The Frankenhain Tourist Information Center is located in the municipal building in the town center; Frankenhain is a state-recognized health resort. Guests can obtain a guest card on the basis of the spa contribution paid to the municipality. It offers free use of public transport with the Rennsteig Ticket within its area of validity. If you would like to take this benefit into account when planning your journey, check the ticket’s current conditions in advance.
